Chiefs fan’s extraordinary radio meltdown over team leaving Arrowhead Stadium

A Kansas City Chiefs fan descended into a stunning meltdown live on the radio as he called for Missouri politicians to resign over the NFL team’s decision to abandon Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs announced in a press conference on Monday that they will be leaving Arrowhead, which has been their home since 1972, and moving across the Missouri River to a brand new stadium in Kansas in 2031.

It marks the second time that the state of Missouri has seen an NFL franchise move away, after the St Louis Rams opted to relocate to Los Angeles back in 2016.

And it left the Missouri residents of Chiefs Kingdom in uproar, as they turned on the state’s politicians, blaming Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and former Jackson County Executive Frank White for allowing the franchise to up sticks and leave.

One Chiefs fan and Kansas City local was left particularly outraged as he unleashed on the pair in a foul-mouthed rant on 96.5 The Fan’s The Drive radio show.

‘I’m p***ed, Carrington!,’ the caller, Mario, began as he addressed host Carrington Harrison.

They will also build a brand new Chiefs headquarters and facility in Olathe, Kansas

The news was confirmed by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt

‘[…] Lucas, you are no longer mayor of nothing! You are just Lucas,’ he continued. ‘And as far as I am concerned, Lucas and White you are on the list. It’s the Lucas and White list. Two losers is what you are. You let Missouri down today.’

As he furiously steamrolled the political duo, Mario accused Lucas and White of turning Kansas City into a ‘Omaha Jr.’

‘Now you out that in your pipe and smoke it,’ he said.

Mario’s attack didn’t end there as he demanded: ‘Now what happens to Kansas City, Missouri?

‘All you people in politics should turn in your resignation effective immediately. Lucas, White, don’t let me catch you outside after dark ’cause we will not be held responsible for what will be done for y’all.’

He seemingly suggested that they were receiving some kind of perks for allowing the team to relocate as he continued: ‘And the rest of you cronies who are sitting back there and waving goodbye, you probably got a kickback, you probably all got season tickets in the new facility.

‘Let me tell you something, all of y’all should turn in your resignation effectively immediately. You shouldn’t be allowed to run for dogs*** or any office in this state or any other state for that matter. And Lucas, I’ll vote for anybody who ever runs against you because you are a liar, you don’t have integrity.

‘You knew that game was over, the jig was up. Yet, you come on national TV or radio, insulting everyone’s intelligence. Y’all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. That’s why I don’t like politicians ’cause you’re a bunch of liars.’

More details about the stadium itself are expected to be revealed later down the line but the Chiefs have insisted it will be a 'state-of-the-art domed stadium'

On Monday, in the wake of the Chiefs’ announcement, Lucas claimed that Jackson County, the City of Kansas City and the State of Missouri put together an offer of more than $1.5 billion in public support to keep the team at Arrowhead.

But the announcement came shortly after a council of top Kansas lawmakers voted unanimously inside a packed room at the state Capitol to allow the state to issue a little more than $2.4 billion in bonds to cover about 60 percent of the cost of the new stadium, a new training facility and retail and entertainment space.

The Chiefs originally planned an $800million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium in a joint effort with the Royals, who are similarly planning to build a new facility to replace Kauffman Stadium. The facilities sit a couple hundred yards apart, across a parking lot, and both teams have leases with Jackson County, Missouri, that expire in January 2031.

But last year, Jackson County voters soundly defeated a local sales tax extension, which would have helped to pay for those renovations to the football stadium while helping to fund a new ballpark for the Royals in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. That energized Kansas’ efforts to lure both teams.

The Chiefs intend their $3 billion stadium project to be built in Kansas City, Kansas, near the Kansas Speedway and a retail district known as The Legends. The area includes Children’s Mercy Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City, and Legends Field, the home of the Kansas City Monarchs minor league baseball team.

The Chiefs also plan to build their $300million practice facility in the Kansas City-metro suburb of Olathe, Kansas. They’ve committed to at least $700million in other development.

In a statement, Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt said: ‘Today we are excited to take another momentous step for the future of the franchise. We have entered into an agreement with the State of Kansas to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season’.

The decision will see the Chiefs bid farewell to Arrowhead Stadium, which is the third-oldest stadium in the league – behind only Soldier Field and Lambeau Field.

The ambitious project is slated to deliver over 20,000 jobs to Kansas and will have an estimated economic impact at around $4.4 billion

Ironically, many fans are unaware that the Chiefs have never previously played in Kansas – including US president Donald Trump.

Back in 2020, after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV triumph, Trump mistakenly congratulated the franchise as well as the ‘Great State of Kansas’.

‘Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game and a fantastic comeback under immense pressure. We are proud of you and the Great State of Kansas and, in fact, the entire USA, so very well. Our Country is PROUD OF YOU!’ he wrote.

Just 12 minutes later, Trump altered his tweet to correctly read the ‘Great State of Missouri.’
