Do not eat: Popular cheese sold at IGA is urgently recalled over fears bacteria could cause fever and vomiting

A popular cheese has been pulled from major supermarket shelves amid fears it could cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and fever.

Batches of La Vera Fresh Ricotta 500g from La Vera Cheese have been recalled in an alert issued by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) on Thursday.

The popular cheese is sold at multiple retailers across Australia, including IGA.

The food regulator said the cheese had been recalled due to a potential contamination with the microbial E. coli.

The bacteria can cause nasty symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever diarrhoea, and loss of appetite.

Most people recover on their own within a week, however some strains can cause dehydration which can lead to kidney complications.

The affected batches carry use-by dates of February 28, 2026; March 4, 2026; March 5, 2026; and March 6, 2026.

The ricotta was stocked in IGA stores in South Australia, Victoria, NSW and West Australia.

Shoppers have been urged not to eat the cheese and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

In a statement, a spokesperson for La Vera Group said it was contacting retailers requesting they pull the cheese from shelves ‘immediately’.

‘There have been no reports of any consumer issues with the product, but we are undertaking this recall because of our commitment to maintaining the highest possible product quality standards,’ the spokesperson said.

FSNAZ said any shoppers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.
