Eight-year-old boy tragically killed while riding his e-bike home from school is pictured

A community is mourning the loss of an eight-year-old boy who tragically died after colliding with an e-bike on his way home from school.

Zeke Hondow was riding down a bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek on Thursday afternoon.

The little boy collided with a 15-year-old boy, who was also on an e-bike. Both of the riders were wearing helmets at the time.

Zeke was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but sadly died after succumbing to his injuries.

The older boy has assisted police with their inquiries.

Better Two Factor News shared a statement from Zeke’s family on Friday.

‘Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Zeke was our sunshine – full of life, laughter, and endless love,’ the family said.

‘We are deeply thankful for the kindness, prayers, and compassion shown by those who have reached out to us during this impossible time.’

A GoFundMe page for Zeke’s family has raised $5,700 of the $10,000 target.

One of Zeke’s relatives shared a link to the fundraiser on social media, paying tribute to the beloved eight-year-old.

‘My cousin’s little 8yr old son has tragically grew (sic) his angel wings,’ they said.

‘Please if you can spare a small donation at this heartbreaking time it would really help the family get through one of the toughest times of their lives.’

Queensland Police’s forensic crash unit is investigating the circumstances of the incident and have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant footage to come forward.

Queensland’s Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg told 7News governments at all levels need to do more to address issues around e-bikes.

‘My thoughts are with the family and the friends… I’ve got an eight-year-old son myself. I can only imagine what they’re going through right now,’ he said.

‘We’ve seen rapid evolution of this technology very quickly, but I think it’s fair to say that governments at all levels need to do more to tackle this.’

Queensland’s Attorney-General Deb Frecklington added that she was working to improve state laws.

‘That is exactly why there is a parliamentary inquiry into e-bikes in this state. Right now, my heart goes out to that family. This is an absolute tragedy,’ she said.
