Elderly man drowns at Melbourne beach after going for evening swim

An elderly man has drowned at a beach in Melbourne’s south.

Emergency services rushed to Hampton Beach following reports a 77-year-old man was pulled from the water while unresponsive about 8.45pm on Tuesday.

CPR was performed on the man but he could not be revived.

It’s believed he suffered cardiac arrest while swimming.

Victoria Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Nine drowning deaths have been recorded in Australia since the beginning of 2026.

All of those deaths occurred at beaches.
