Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me novel has transformed into an Apple TV+ show, which was renewed for a second season that begged a sequel novel to be written by Dave herself.

Who is in the cast of The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2?
Jennifer Garner will return as Hannah, one of the main characters of Season 1 and Dave’s novel, as well as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Owen Michaels, and Angourie Rice, who plays Bailey Michaels. David Morse is also set to reprise his role from the first season, which was a big reveal and piece to the puzzle of both the show’s and book’s plot.
Returning cast are Augusto Aguilera, Josh Hamilton, Nick Hargrove and Michael Hyatt. Newcomers in addition to Judy Greer, whose casting Deadline first announced, and Rita Wilson include Michael Galante, John Noble, and Luke Kirby. Missing from the returners is Aisha Tyler, who played Hannah’s best friend Jules Nichols.

Season 2 will be based on Dave’s sequel to her The Last Thing He Told Me novel. Titled, The First Time I Saw Himthe book published on January 6, 2026.
“Now whenever I’m writing I see Jen’s face, which is a very nice face to see, but it makes me feel like Hannah’s story is not done,” Dave said at Deadline Contenders TV 2023 before the show was renewed for another season.
What happened in Season 1 of The Last Thing He Told Me?
Pretty much tailored to the novel itself, the first season followed the mysterious disappearance of Coster-Waldau’s Owen Michaels, husband to Garner’s Hannah Hall and father to Rice’s Bailey. Hannah, stepmother to Bailey, took charge of trying to find Owen after the last thing he told her in a note was “Protect her” meaning his daughter. Bailey bonds with Hannah in the process of the investigation, and some of the secrets that unfold would be sure to crack any firm foundation. Things left off on a dour note as David Morse’s character struck a deal with Hannah that she would care for Bailey as long as Owen didn’t show his face in their lives again.

Who else is behind Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me?
Josh Singer, Dave’s husband, created the show alongside his wife. Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter and star Jennifer Garner also executive produce the show.
Aaron Zelman has joined the upcoming season as co-showrunner and executive producer with Singer. Daisy von Scherler Mayer and Merri Howard will serve as executive producers for season two of the series from 20th Television and Hello Sunshine.
