Ex Royal Hairdresser Slams Commentary Around Kate Middleton’s New Blonde ‘Do

Princess Diana’s longtime hairstylist Sam McKnight has stepped in to call out rumours claiming Kate Middleton’s new blonde hair is actually a wig, following a whirlwind of comments online about the Princess of Wales’ recent makeover.

After Kate turned up at the National History Museum’s newly revamped gardens alongside Prince William this week, everyone was talking about her new honey blonde hair.

The couple’s first joint appearance after the summer break was supposed to be all about the new gardens, but all eyes were on Kate’s hair — worn in her trademark bouncy blowout, with a sun-kissed twist.

Speculation had already kicked off when she was seen arriving at church near Balmoral Castle with William and their kids, George, Charlotte, and Louis, rocking a noticeably lighter look.

Pretty quickly, the rumour mill on social media kicked up a gear.

“Surely the #RoyalFamily can afford a better looking wig than this for #KateMiddleton. Ladies, this is why you’re supposed to earn your own money…..so that you can go and buy proper wigs for yourself!!!” one user wrote on X.

“Kate Middleton wearing the cheapest wig I’ve ever seen in my life 😂,” said another.

Not everyone was convinced, though, that Kate’s new hair was fake. Others pointed out there could be hair extensions involved, with one user chiming in, “It’s not a wig; you can see at the front that it isn’t a wig. #KateMiddleton has hair extensions in, look at the back of her head, 👇. She’s been wearing hair extensions forever?”

Sam McKnight, who spent seven years working as Princess Diana’s personal hairdresser, took to Instagram to call out the online nastiness.

“I am shocked, horrified, dismayed and disgusted by all the nasty comments about the Princess of Wales today,” he wrote.

“A woman’s hair is very personal to her, it’s armour, defence, confidence and so much more.”

He didn’t stop there, adding, “I cannot believe how evil and lacking in any kind of empathy are the comments, the majority made apparently by other women, attacking a vulnerable other young woman, who has no choice, by dint of who she married and the role she took on, to bravely face the public.”

McKnight also reminded everyone that Kate is facing her own real-life challenges, pointing out she recently battled cancer and announced her diagnosis in March 2024.

After chemotherapy, she shared that her cancer was in remission in January 2025.

“I’m sure she would rather be away from the public arena. She has brilliantly and quietly, unselfishly represented our country, the soft power we still have as a nation,” he concluded.

“Cancer affects individuals differently, but is life changing for everyone So FFS LEAVE HER ALONE. SHAME ON YOU.”

Many fans applauded Sam for his words. “Well said Sam, she looks beautiful, shame on those being cruel,” commented one user.

“Couldn’t agree more Sam, I lost my hair at 42 through chemo, shaved my head and never wore a wig. People always think they have a right to judge others it’s disgraceful,” said another.

When it comes down to it, whether it’s a new dye job, some extensions, or just good lighting, it’s clear the internet can’t get enough of Royal hair — but perhaps, as McKnight pointed out, some things are just none of our business.
