Finn Russell v Antoine Dupont: Two generational talents at the peak of their powers. The two best players on the planet right now. On the same field at the same time, with a trophy to win… it could be a game for the ages

Back home in Toulouse at the Chateau de Dupont, the trophy cabinet is bursting at the seams. They might yet have to build an extension to store all of the silverware racked up by Monsieur Antoine.
At the age of 29, France’s little maestro has won it all; five league titles with Toulouse, two Champions Cups, two Six Nations crowns, one of which was a Grand Slam in 2022.
Dupont arrives in Edinburgh with another Slam in his sights and, in amongst the slew of silver, there is also a World Player of the Year gong from 2021.
Finn Russell does not have the same personal trophy haul to match Dupont, but only a fool would believe him to be in any way an inferior player.
Specifically with regards to that World Player of the Year award, there is a growing feeling that Russell would put himself in pole position to win it if he can inspire Scotland to glory over these final two weekends.
He won a Treble with Bath last season. In the summer, he then led the British and Irish Lions to a series victory against Australia.
Scotland will need to stop France superstar Antoine Dupont at Murrayfield on Saturday
If he could follow that by winning a Six Nations title with Scotland, his credentials would be undeniable. There’s a long way to go, of course, and two mammoth challenges lie in wait.
But that’s the sort of conversation in which Russell now finds himself. His legacy as Scotland’s greatest ever player is already secure.
And he could yet elevate himself further. In this personal duel that will unfold at Murrayfield on Saturday afternoon, Russell against Dupont will be a clash of the titans.
The sparks will surely fly as these two magicians pit their wits against each other – and the fact a Six Nations title is on the line makes it all the more enthralling.
It is rare for the stars to align quite like this; two generational talents at the peak of their powers, the two best players on the planet right now, on the same field at the same time, with a trophy to win.
Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu was asked if it is fair to frame the contest between Russell and Dupont in those terms. If there are any better players in the game right now, he hasn’t seen them.
‘Are they the two best players in the game right now? I’m biased because Finn plays for my team, and obviously everyone knows about Dupont,’ said Tuipulotu. ‘But if not them, who?
‘They’re definitely two players at the top of their game, and they can do some things on the rugby field that I don’t think anyone else on the planet can do, so it makes for an interesting game.
‘I think their battle and the battle of the half-backs is a big part of the game. Matthieu Jalibert has been playing unbelievable rugby as well and I know Ben (White) is really excited at the prospect of competing with Dupont.
Finn Russell will be key to Scotland’s hopes of causing an upset against unbeaten France
‘So the half-backs battle is very interesting – and I think will go a long way to deciding the game.’
Even though it is now almost three years since Russell left Racing 92 to join Bath, the French rugby public continue to eulogise about him.
He might just be the greatest player France never had. French fans and journalists marvel at his every move on the field. He never won any trophies with Racing, but his legacy lingers on.
Russell has been pivotal in Scotland’s two bounceback wins over England and Wales after losing their opener to Italy in Rome.
Especially in Cardiff a fortnight ago, it was a genius moment of improvisation as he combined with Darcy Graham for the little winger to score the try which really got Scotland going in the second half.
Scotland will need all of that creativity – and then some – against a French side who have been at their free-flowing and free-scoring best so far in the championship.
No team has been able to lay a glove on Fabien Galthie’s men. They destroyed Ireland on the opening night, ran amok in Cardiff, and saw off Italy with plenty to spare.
Three bonus-point wins from three. They are firm favourites to go on and win the Grand Slam, and could actually clinch the title today with another bonus-point triumph.
If Russell and Scotland can find top gear, up against Dupont and the baby-faced assassins in the French backline, we could well witness a game for the ages.
‘Stylistically, historically, these two teams that are playing this weekend make for good match-ups because we play a similar style,’ noted Tuipulotu. ‘We both play a similar style, so it should make for a great game.’
What about the view from France? Dupont held court with typical class and composure at Murrayfield on Friday afternoon.
Russell and Dupont are, arguably, the two best players on the planet right now
‘Scotland have the most dangerous attack in the championship,’ said the French captain and scrum-half when asked about the challenged posed by Russell and Co.
‘I hope there will be a show, but it is important that we do not lose the focus of winning the match. But if there can be both, it is obviously all the better.
‘We have the keys to compete with Scotland, but we will have to be at the maximum of our concentration and intensity to be able to compete.
‘The goal is to win the match. We know how difficult it is to win here. We know all about the quality of the Scottish team.’
This is Scotland’s biggest match in 11 years, going back to the World Cup quarter-final against Australia in 2015.
It is a game which could open the door to glory in Dublin next weekend. For the first time in the Six Nations era, Scotland could go into the final day with a championship to win.
That feels like a world removed from where they were post-Rome a few weeks ago. Given that France have not been behind in any of their three games so far, it’s a tall order.
But not impossible. France have a lot of young players in their team. There’s no telling how they might react under pressure if a team can really test them.
The wizardry of Russell and Dupont will cast a spell over Murrayfield. Enjoy it for what it is; the two best players on the planet right now going toe-to-toe. It will be anything but dull.
