Footy legend Brendan Fevola reveals the AFL’s ‘new woke’ as he blasts star from his own club for being a crybaby

Footy legend Brendan Fevola has sensationally declared he is ‘glad’ Charlie Curnow is likely to leave Carlton – then declared that stars using the trade period to get out of contracts with their club is the AFL’s new woke.

Curnow – who earns a reported $1.1 million a season with the Blues – is believed to have fallen out with coach Michael Voss and is seeking a fresh start.

The forward toured the Swans’ facilities earlier this week – the dual Coleman medallist is seemingly happy to relocate immediately.

‘I’m actually glad he’s getting traded,’ a fired-up Fevola declared on the Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick show on Wednesday.

‘It [seeking a trade while contracted] is the new woke. I think Charlie had a bit of a disagreement with the coach [Michael Voss].

‘Vossy is hard and I think he gave him a talking to, and he [Curnow] didn’t like it, so he goes ‘waaaah’, and he’s out,’ Fevola continued, mimicking the sound of a crying baby.

Fevola did concede professional footy is a business, and in his eyes, neither the club or player need to display loyalty to the other.

He cited an example from his playing days, where he was moved on from Carlton with two years of his contract remaining.

It comes as Sydney’s play for Curnow hit a snag on the final day of the AFL trade period on Wednesday, with the Blues officially rejecting the Swans’ first offer.

The Swans’ Curnow chase and Hawthorn’s audacious attempt to snare Essendon captain Zach Merrett will go down to the wire in a blockbuster final day.

The pair headline a series of big names whose futures will be decided by Wednesday’s 7:30pm AEDT deadline.

Fellow stars Christian Petracca (Gold Coast), Clayton Oliver (GWS), Rowan Marshall (Geelong), Callum Ah Chee (Adelaide) and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Gold Coast) are all still awaiting moves to their clubs of choice.

Carlton have indicated only a ‘Godfather deal’ would shift their position on Curnow, who is contracted until the end of 2029.

The Swans proposed sending draft pick No.11, a first-round selection next year and players Ollie Florent and Will Hayward to Carlton for Curnow and pick No.22, which was knocked back by the Blues.

Essendon have maintained they will not entertain a trade for Merrett, who is signed until the end of 2027 but is desperate to leave for Hawthorn as he chases team success.

Elsewhere, the Bombers knocked back Hawthorn’s first bid for Merrett, who blindsided his club a month ago when news broke he had met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell.
