Former NRL bad boy Todd Carney joins the Gold Coast Titans – ‘love to help the club become a force’

Former NRL bad boy Todd Carney has officially joined the Gold Coast Titans – in a mentoring role.

Carney, 39, has taken up a position fulltime as a pathways coach and will oversee talent identification as he nurtures the club’s future stars.

It comes as the Titans confirmed a host of new faces, including Panthers hooker Luke Summerton, Raiders winger Jensen Taumoepeau and Ipswich rake Oliver Pascoe, the 2025 Queensland Cup Player of the Year.

‘I’ll be doing the pathways and talent identification, which is great,’ Carney told News Corp.

‘I’d love to help the club become a force, and it starts at the grassroots level.’

Carney was involved in a number of alcohol-fuelled dramas during his chequered NRL career – notably the infamous bubbler incident when at the Sharks – but there is no denying his talent and footy IQ.

He debuted at 18 for Canberra before playing three Origin matches for NSW in 2012 and one Test for Australia in 2010.

Carney was also crowned the Dally M medallist the same year where he guided the Roosters to the Grand Final.

Hannay, who has replaced Des Hasler in the hot seat, believes securing Carney’s services could prove to be invaluable.

‘I’m really excited about Todd coming on board to join our pathways department,’ he said.

‘Todd’s story is well known. He was one of the most talented halves of his generation and someone who possessed a football brain few could match.

‘He is a great asset for us.’

Meanwhile, backrower David Fifita has left the Titans, inking a two-year deal with the Rabbitohs under coach Wayne Bennett.

Fifita was officially released on October 28, ending his five-year stint with the club.

The former Queensland Origin representative only managed eight NRL games this season under Hasler.
