Golf legend Phil Mickelson suffers humiliating meltdown that eliminates him from PGA Championship

LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson had a hole to forget during this week’s PGA Championship as the lefty golfer finished round two well below the cut line.

After a first round that ended at eight-over par, Mickelson would need something of a miracle to turn his fortunes around.

Mickelson finished the front-nine at two-under for the day and a birdie on the eleventh put him three-under for the day and five-under for the round.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last long thanks to a disaster on the 12th hole.

Mickelson smoked his tee shot 323 yards – leaving an 121 yard shot to the hole. However, his second shot went left of the green and into a bunker.

That’s where the nightmare began. Mickelson, a golfer known for his prolific short game, just could not get off the beach.

It took Mickelson a shocking four attempts to get out of the bunker at the 12th hole before he finally got out.

Making matters worse, the shot that finally got out of the sand trap rolled far away from the hole.

It set him up with a nearly 54 foot putt for bogey that he rolled to within three feet before finally tapping in for a merciful double bogey.

Over the last six holes, Mickelson birdied twice and bogeyed twice to finish nine-over for the tournament and miss his fourth cut in his previous five majors.

Since winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in 2021, the 54-year-old Mickelson’s most notable result at a major was a tie for second at The Masters in 2023.

Other than that? A T62 at the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines, a T58 at the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, a T60 at the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon, and a whopping eight missed cuts.
