He butchered a country star’s mom in an attack that shook America. Now insiders have revealed his sinister motive… and how his family’s darkest fear came true

When Kevin Moses Walker stormed out of his parents’ home in Pikesville, Maryland, on July 31, his family immediately began to fear the worst.

The hulking 41-year-old, a recluse and avid online gamer, had just had a furious argument with his parents, Moses and Janice, about his lack of prospects and drive.

They told him it was time to switch off his games console and get a job. Walker hadn’t worked in more than a decade, having been fired by the TSA at the age of 26 and never attempting to find another job.

Walker left his family home in a fury. His relatives were instantly concerned he’d run off to kill himself, a source with knowledge of the matter exclusively told the Daily Mail. But even their worst fears couldn’t have predicted what would happen next.

Within 72 hours, Walker would wreak havoc at a Virginia campsite, then break into a nearby home and stab a woman to death before being shot dead by her husband.

The victim was 62-year-old Holly Hatcher, the mother of rising country music star Spencer Hatcher. Her husband, Michael, 65, was also injured.

News of her murder stunned locals and perplexed police. Walker had no documented history of criminal or violent behavior, and investigators have struggled to establish a motive for the crime.

However, those close to the Walker family believe his violent and seemingly random rampage was carried out to spite his parents, the source claimed.

‘Some think he did it to punish his parents,’ shared the source, who asked to remain anonymous.

‘They just wanted him to do more with his life than to play online games at 41… nobody saw this coming. Everyone is in shock.’

Walker’s final hours began with his arrival at the Endless Caverns Resort in New Market, Virginia, on August 1.

The campsite’s general manager, Mike Stewart, told the Daily Mail earlier this month that Walker was polite in his interactions with staff and other guests, and neither he nor his colleagues noticed anything unusual about Walker’s behavior.

Walker went on a tour of a cavern with a large group of tourists at 3pm and then told camp staff he was interested in renting an RV site to stay the night.

‘He was polite and he didn’t do anything to raise our alarms,’ said Stewart, who escorted Walker to the plot. ‘We see a lot of people, and he just seemed like a regular guy who was just passing through and needed somewhere to stay.’

Three hours later, Walker drove to a nearby Walmart where he purchased a large knife and a sleeping bag. Surveillance cameras captured him leaving the store.

What happened in the hours after remains unclear, but Walker’s behavior appeared increasingly erratic.

Sometime between 3am and 5am on August 2, Walker rammed his car into the front door of the resort’s gift shop.

Walker entered the store but did not steal anything. He also ‘fooled around’ in the camp’s caverns but didn’t cause any additional damage, Stewart said.

His car was later found abandoned a short distance away at the side of a road.

The source close to Walker’s family believes he was trying to kill himself when he drove head-on into the camp’s gift shop.

When that effort failed, the source believes he fled the scene in a panic and spent the next few hours hiding, paranoid that police were closing in on him.

Indeed, during that time, Rockingham County police issued felony warrants for his arrest, but investigators had no reason to suspect ‘potential for any violence,’ Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson previously shared.

The next call authorities received was at 11.58pm on Sunday, August 3, from a wounded Michael Hatcher in Harrisonburg.

His wife had been stabbed to death by a home invader, and the culprit was now lying dead in the driveway, Michael told an operator.

Walker also tried to stab Michael. The fight spilled into the driveway, where Michael grabbed a handgun from his car and shot Walker dead, ending the rampage.

Walker’s family had been racked with worry while their son was missing, the Daily Mail’s source says.

His parents kept relatives and friends up to date on the search for him. Their concern escalated when they were informed of the incident at the Endless Caverns Resort.

The next update they provided was that Walker had died.

The family’s inner circle presumed it was suicide; it wasn’t until the reports of Holly Hatcher’s death hit mainstream news that they started putting the pieces together.

‘Everyone is just shocked,’ said the source. ‘We thought when he hit the building, it was a suicide attempt. He did not have a lot going for him – his only friends were online.’

Not only had he never acted violently before, but relatives were shocked that he had the stamina for something as physical as stabbing two people.

‘Nobody saw this coming at all… this doesn’t make sense to anyone,’ the source said.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this month, Michael Hatcher stated that many of the questions surrounding the case may never be answered – and Walker’s true motive may never be known.

The tragic ordeal, and their only child’s uncharacteristic display of evil, have left Walker’s parents devastated.

‘They have cried so many tears for the victim and their family.’

Walker’s funeral has been scheduled for August 25 in Baltimore, Maryland, an obituary notice uncovered by the Daily Mail reveals.

Two solemn tributes are posted beneath the notice, both sharing condolences and relief that Walker is now ‘resting in peace’.

Calls to Walker’s family have gone unanswered.

The TSA has been contacted for comment about Walker’s employment history. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office has also not responded to a request for comment.

Spencer Hatcher canceled several upcoming tour dates in the wake of his mom’s death, citing a ‘monumental loss’ in his family.

Speaking at a press conference with his father, he emphasized his family would only stick to the facts, considering the speculation about what unfolded.
