High school football star arrested for shooting teammate hours after Texas state championship win

A high school football player in Texas has been arrested for allegedly shooting a teammate hours after the pair won a state championship.

Xavier Mayfield, an 18-year-old at Dallas South Oak Cliff High School, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after admitting to accidentally shooting his teammate with an AR 15 rifle, according to a police affidavit.

The victim has not been identified publicly and his current condition is unknown.

Mayfield, the victim and another teammate were in a bedroom ‘reviewing photos that were taken of a football game that had occurred early in the day,’ according witness statements contained in the affidavit reviewed by Fox4News.com.

The other teammate told police he was exiting out of the room to take a shower when he noticed Mayfield ‘swinging the rifle that was used in the offense.’ Mayfield said the safety was on, but the gun discharged nonetheless, wounding the victim.

The affidavit does not explain who owns the gun or why Mayfield was holding it.

Dallas ISD hasn’t issued any statement on the shooting, which took place hours after Dallas South Oak Cliff won the Conference 5A Division II State Championship in Texas on Saturday with a 35-19 victory over Richmond Randle.

Mayfield is a senior strong safety, who happened to have an interception in Saturday’s victory.

Dallas City Councilman Maxie Johnson called the incident a ‘mistake’ when discussing her district with reporters.

‘And sometimes, when they’re away from us, mistakes happen. Of course, I heard it was an accident. There was nothing malicious going on,’ said Johnson. ‘Unfortunately, this happened, but this does not take away from the work that has gone on and the work that we will continue to do together.

‘We have great kids at South Oak Cliff High School,’ Johnson continued. ‘Our kids have bright futures, and we’re praying for them and know that they’re going to be successful.’

Dallas South Oak Cliff is the same high school that produced Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, as well as a number of NFL players.
