Never one to avoid controversy, beauty YouTuber James Charles has been called out online after he paid a visit to Bunnings on the Gold Coast over the weekend to try his first sausage sizzle.

Aussies would be well aware that Bunnings’ sausage sizzle is much more than just a food stall outside the hardware store, but rather a weekend ritual and beloved community event. Shoppers can grab a barbecued sausage served in a slice of bread before they wander through the aisles, with all proceeds going to charity.

Charles, who is currently in Australia to launch his makeup brand Painted, posted a video to TikTok on Sunday documenting his experience and had quite a mixed reaction.
“I’m in Australia, and apparently I’ve been told I need to try a Bunnings sausage sizzle,” he said. “I don’t know what the fuck that is, but I’m always down for trying local foods, let’s go.”
Firstly, the content creator admitted he was “literally so confused” when he realised the sausage sizzle was “just [a] fucking little green tent” in the underground carpark.
He then appeared to mix-up his Aussie delicacies by ordering “six sausage rolls”, and was baffled by what he received.
“This is the sausage sizzle? This is just a fucking hot dog,” he remarked, before putting “ketchup” and mustard on the sausage and tasting it.
“It’s literally just a hot dog. Honestly, it’s pretty good. I wish the bread was thicker, like I need more bread to sausage sizzle ratio… It’s really good.”
Followers outraged by James Charles’ review
Charles’ video has since racked up over three million views and thousands of comments from people not only shocked that he would visit a Bunnings sausage sizzle, but that he would describe it as simply a “hot dog”.
“It’s just a hotdog? DUDE SHOW SOME RESPECT TO OUR NATIONAL DISH,” one passionate follower wrote.
“THAT IS NOT A HOTDOG,” someone else said, to which Charles replied, “Yes it is”.
“There is no way u just put mustard on a sanga,” another commented.
“HOW DARE YOU CALL IT A HOTDOG AND TOMATO SAUCE AND KETCHUP SO DIFFERENT STOP DISRESPECTING OUR CULTURE,” a different user furiously typed.

Bunnings itself has since responded to the controversy, with a spokesperson telling PEDESTRIAN.TV that they “love seeing people embrace the iconic sausage sizzle”.
“The humble snag isn’t just a tasty bite — it’s a tradition that helps local communities thrive,” they said. “Over the past year alone, more than 36,000 sausage sizzles have fired up at Bunnings, contributing to $67 million raised towards local community groups across Australia and New Zealand.”
Charles paid $100 for his six sausages, rounding up the total from $31 so he could give an additional charitable donation. He also bought an iconic Bunnings straw hat previously modelled by celebs like Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Pitbull.
The internet mogul is no stranger to controversy while visiting the Gold Coast, with his infamous ‘bye sister’ scandal taking place during his visit in 2019.
