Kingsway traffic delays in Melbourne after dramatic police chase ends in crash

Melbourne motorists face a nightmare commute to work after a police chase ended in a dramatic crash outside Crown Casino.

Kings Way remains closed in both directions between the West Gate Freeway and Flinders Street.

Police launched a pursuit after spotting an allegedly stolen minivan at Truganina in the city’s west about 4am Tuesday.

The van was followed along the West Gate Freeway until it exited at the Kings Way off-ramp and headed towards the city.

Vehicle immobilisation devices were deployed but the van driver allegedly refused to pull over for police.

The chase was briefly terminated after the van crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

Moments later, the van crashed head-on into a silver taxi on the Kings Way Bridge.

The taxi driver and passenger were treated at the scene.

The minivan driver was taken to hospital under police guard.

Police allege a significant quantity of drugs were found inside the van.

Commuters are being urged to avoid Kings Way and consider alternative routes.

Anyone who witnessed or has dash cash or CCTV of the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers.

More to come.
