Manhunt underway after man allegedly leapt into car stopped in traffic and threatened driver with a meat cleaver

An unidentified man is being sought by police after a bizarre incident in which he allegedly jumped into a car stopped at traffic lights and brandished a meat cleaver at the driver.

NSW Police shared a picture of the wanted man on Tuesday night after he threatened to injure the driver, unknown to him, in Newcastle, on the NSW Central Coast, about three weeks ago.

‘About 7pm on December 10, a 20-year-old man was driving a vehicle in Railway Street, Newcastle,’ police said in a statement.

‘While stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Hunter Street, an unknown man allegedly entered the vehicle and threatened the driver with a meat cleaver before exiting the vehicle.’

The driver was not injured in the attack.

The man is described as being aged in his 20s with a fair complexion and wearing a black t-shirt, grey shorts, white shoes and a black cap.

He was also carrying a small, dark backpack.

Anyone with information in relation to his identity or whereabouts is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
