The government has vowed to eradicate left-wing extremism (LWE) by March 31, 2026. Over the past one year, some of the topmost Maoist leaders have been killed and many others have surrendered.
Minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai said in response to a question from BJP’s Lok Sabha MP Janardan Singh Sigriwal that Maoist violence has declined to 218 incidents so far in 2025 from the high of 1,936 incidents in 2010.
As a result, deaths of civilians and security forces have decreased 91% this year to 93 from the high of 1,005 in 2010. At the same time, till December 1 this year, security forces killed 335 Maoists and arrested 942 while 2,167 Maoists surrendered.
As for Maoist-affected districts, the minister said the number reduced from 126 to 90 in April 2018, 70 in July 2021, 38 in April 2024, 18 in April 2025 and only 11 in October 2025, with only three districts now categorised as ‘Most LWE Affected’.
