Former Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps has revealed regrets over comments made in the autobiography she released last year, explaining that “there were clearly things that I could have done better”.
Earps’ book contained several comments that caused controversy at the time, with the 32-year-old claiming that Hannah Hampton had been “rewarded for bad behaviour” by Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman who chose her ahead of Earps for a Euro 2025 qualifier.
The ex-England stopper now claims she understands why the comments caused controversy and condemnation, explaining that she has “learned some tough lessons” but has since had a “really positive conversation” with Wiegman.
“That was kind of my first rodeo with ‘cancel culture’, and 0 out of 10 – would not recommend to other people,” Earps told The Guardian after the opening of a community football pitch in her hometown of Nottingham.
“I take full responsibility for the book and the things that happened around the book.
“There were some tough lessons learned. I’m human. I’m not perfect, I’m still learning. I’m still growing as a person. I want to use those lessons going forward.”
Earps also revealed she has made contact with her former national team boss, Wiegman, and that the pair have cleared the air.
“Sarina and I have spoken,” added Earps. “It was a really positive conversation. And I’m really grateful to Sarina for that opportunity for us to speak.
“Ultimately, now I’ve had some time and distance from it, I can understand it [the backlash]. Now I can see things for what they are. Life is about lessons and growing and constantly striving to be the best version of yourself.”
Earps originally announced her retirement from international football in May of last year after being informed she wouldn’t be England’s starting goalkeeper at the upcoming European Championships, and she revealed that something was “in the works” with the FA to celebrate her retirement.
The 32-year-old currently plays for French side PSG but is approaching the final four months of her contract. When asked about the situation, she replied: “We’ll have to wait and see, won’t we? I’m not too sure yet. I know I’m really enjoying Paris.”
