Moment idiot tourist is led away by Italian police after jumping into Rome’s ancient Trevi Fountain

An idiotic tourist was escorted away by Italian police after he jumped into Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain.

The smirking tourist, wearing a blue t-shirt and white shorts, leapt into the 263-year-old baroque fountain despite strict rules against entering the water, as hundreds of visitors watched on.

He is then helped out of the fountain by an onlooker before a policeman intervenes as he tries to walk away from the world famous tourist attraction.

Lukas Vöhser Falcón, 18, from San Agustín, Gran Canaria, captured the moment as he holidayed in the Italian capital on July 27.

The mechanical engineering student, who was travelling across Europe with a group of friends, said: ‘Our last stops were Rome and the Amalfi Coast.

‘I was recording a video of the fountain and I saw the man jump in.

‘I think he just did it for fun – but five seconds later the police came and took him.

‘I don’t know where – I guess he went to the station.

‘Everyone was so surprised when it happened.’

The Trevi Fountain, built over 30 years in the 18th century, has long been a hotspot for public nuisance.

A New Zealander who lives in London was fined €500 (£430) for jumping into the landmark while being pursued by police in February.

Rome police said that ‘alcohol was definitely involved’.

The man was stopped by Italian cops with two companions but managed to wriggle free and jump into the water feature.

Meanwhile, last June, video footage captured the moment Brits cheered as a tourist was tackled by Italian police after he tried to scale the fountain’s marble horse.

The 27-year-old Ukrainian man was fined €1000 (£860) and banned from Rome,

And in 2023, climate activists were dragged out of the famous fountain after a protest against the continued funding of fossil fuels.

Seven activists from the anti-climate change organisation Last Generation climbed into the landmark fountain and poured a vegetable-based charcoal dye into it to turn the water black.

The fountain is one of Italy’s most popular tourist spots and between 10,000 to 12,000 people used to visit daily before a new queuing system, with a cap of 400 people at a time, was introduced to prevent excess crowds.

Tossing a coin in the fountain after making a wish became such a tradition that the city authorities used to rake in €10,000 (£8,300) a week, which was donated to a charity.
