NRL superstar Latrell Mitchell targeted with vile online abuse from footy ‘fans’ following hamstring injury at training

Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell has been subjected to online abuse from footy ‘fans’ after injuring his hamstring at training on Wednesday in Sydney.
Scans will determine the severity of the complaint, with the fullback now racing the clock to be fit for his team’s NRL season opener against the Dolphins on March 7 at Suncorp Stadium.
Many supporters sympathised after South Sydney confirmed skipper Cameron Murray is set to be sidelined for at least six months with a suspected Achilles tendon rupture – but sadly, others reacted with glee following news of Mitchell’s setback.
‘Rumour has it that a Mr Whippy van started up its music as it went past the ground and Latrell broke stride and tore his hammy,’ one said.
Another stated: ‘Here we go again, is he [Mitchell] going to cry racism?
A third weighed in with: ‘Latrell was reportedly in the line at KFC when he pulled his hamstring.’

Mitchell, 27, has battled hamstring injuries across his colourful footy career

One footy ‘fan’ asked if Latrell Mitchell was ‘going to cry racism’ after his latest setback

Another suggested if the Rabbitohs were playing their season opener in Las Vegas, the fullback would be ‘right to go’

A third felt the ‘Latrell Mitchell experiment’ at South Sydney has been ‘nothing but suspensions and soft tissue injuries’
‘Only Cameron Murray will be missed,’ added another.
‘Latrell bunging it on again, highest paid non starter in the league,’ said a fifth footy follower.
It comes as ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys recently called for social media bullying to end amid fears some high profile stars could walk away from the sport due to relentless criticism from keyboard warriors.
‘Latrell Mitchell is one of the great players in the game and we want him here to stay,’ V’landys told News Corp.
‘We want him at his best. We [also] can’t forget he is human at the end of the day.’
Mitchell, 27, has battled a series of hamstring injuries across his colourful career.
He torn tendons in his left hamstring twice – in 2020 and 2022 – and no doubt will be frustrated at his latest setback.
The NSW Blues star only managed 11 games last season, and was sidelined for the second half of the campaign with a foot issue as the Rabbitohs again missed the top eight.
It comes as Mitchell reportedly trained soundly all off-season, and was keen to hit the ground running in 2025 after being reunited with head coach Wayne Bennett.
Betting markets quickly reacted on Wednesday to the club’s injury crisis, with the Rabbitohs now rated a $34 chance to win the premiership.
