Rosehill loses $10m Golden Eagle to Randwick after failed sale bid

The announcement comes after Racing NSW and the ATC’s plans to build a $7 million Base Camp entertainment precinct at Randwick were revealed. The Everest-themed version of Flemington’s famous Birdcage has been inspired by sport VIP hubs at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and Australian Open tennis in Melbourne, and LIV Golf in Adelaide.

“The move to Royal Randwick will further increase the event’s appeal to audiences and punters on and off track following the running of the TAB Everest,” ATC chair said Tim Hale said in a statement.

“The addition of a new modern trackside spectator precinct this Spring will be a pivotal viewing point for Australia’s two richest races.”

The switch could also improve wagering turnover on the Golden Eagle, which is the second-biggest betting race in NSW behind the $20 million Everest – the richest race on turf.

However, the change means the Randwick track will face a heavy workload, now hosting four major spring carnival meetings – The Everest (October 18), Spring Champion Stakes (October 25), Golden Eagle (November 1) and the Big Dance (November 4) – within two and a half weeks.

“The Golden Eagle race, especially with the $1 million charity component, forms a prominent position at the new Randwick Carnival,” Racing NSW chair Saranne Cooke said in a release.

“It will, like The Everest, become the young generation’s must-go event. Once again in 2025, the Golden Eagle is attracting world-class contenders, with a growing number of international stars — many of whom have already triumphed in prestigious Group races across Europe and Asia— now targeting the Randwick feature.”

It is believed no other feature meetings at Rosehill are in line for a move. The Golden Gift meeting on November 8 remains at the track as a spring feature.
