Ruby Rose Calls Sydney Sweeney A ‘Cretin’ As Her Movie Christy Tanks At Box Office

Australian actress Ruby Rose has come out swinging — and not in the boxing ring. The Orange Is the New Black star took to Threads to unleash on Sydney Sweeney after the US actress’ new film Christy tanked at the box office.

The biopic, which tells the story of boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin, managed to scrape together just $US1.3 million (around $1.99 million AUD) in its opening weekend — one of the worst debuts in recent memory.

Rose didn’t hold back in her post, revealing she was originally meant to play Christy (whom she referred to as “Cherry”) and claiming the first version of the project had been a queer-led passion piece.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” she wrote. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

But she saved her most brutal words for Sweeney herself, accusing the 28-year-old of hypocrisy and even suggesting she “hates gay people”.

“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” Rose said, before firing off the now-viral line: “You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Meanwhile, Sweeney’s team is allegedly in full-blown damage control mode.

Several online figures, including BroBible senior culture writer Eric Italiano, claim they’ve been contacted by Sweeney’s publicity team about Christy coverage. On X (formerly Twitter), Italiano shared what he says was a PR email asking him to tweak a post about the movie’s poor performance.

“Got this PR email today, never got one like it before — her team’s down BAD,” he wrote. The alleged message asked him to update his headline to reflect that “despite low box office, the audience has spoken”, claiming the film was “99 per cent positive on the Popcornmeter”.

It apparently concluded, “Box office aside, this one’s a win in all the ways that matter. We’re so proud to bring back independent cinema and share a story that genuinely deserves to be seen!”

Filmmaker Brian Long also shared screenshots of what appeared to be a similar message sent by “Paradigm Talent Agency”, defending Sweeney’s performance and asking that critics show “more balanced thought” toward the independent drama.

Neither Sweeney nor her representatives have commented publicly on the alleged emails, but the internet has already picked sides — some calling her team’s moves “normal PR spin”, others labelling it “desperate”.

After Christy’s rough opening weekend, Sweeney posted on Instagram defending the project, saying she was “deeply proud” of the film and its message about survival and hope.

“I am so deeply proud of this movie,” she wrote. “Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”

She added that Christy was “one of the greatest honours of my life” and insisted that not all art should be judged by its box office result: “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

Sweeney, has already faced her fair share of controversy online after she was revealed to be a registered Republican voter earlier this year and of course, who could forget her American Eagle jeans ad that was accused of promoting white supremacy and being “Nazi propaganda”.

It’s safe to say the actress is having a tough time facing the consequences of her own actions.
