Savannah Guthrie’s 84-Year-Old Mother Nancy Missing; Sheriff Concerned, Searching The Area

Savannah Guthrie‘s 84-year-old mother Nancy is missing, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters at a briefing tonight that the elder Guthrie was last seen by family at about 9:30 or 9:45 last night. His deputies were out looking for her this evening and asking for the public’s help in locating Guthrie. Also involved in the search were neighbors and trained search and rescue dogs.

“We get these calls quite often, and we do a good job of searching the area,” he said, “but his one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found just in looking at the scene.”

He declined to elaborate on what specifically about the scene raised concern.

Asked about the involvement of homicide detectives and whether that is standard procedure, the sheriff replied, “It’s not standard. Typically our homicide team comes out when he have a homicide, a body.”

He said that although no body has been found the homicide team was brought in this time “simply because what the scene was telling us.” They are currently “processing” the scene.

“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us.”

Pima County is in southern Arizona and abuts the border with Mexico. Mentioning the chill in the night air, Sheriff Nanos expressed concern for an 84 year old who is not in good physical health being away from home and potentially exposed to the elements all night. The temperature in Tuscon, Pima’s largest city, is forecast to drop to 50 degrees tonight.

“She has no cognitive issues at all,” said the sheriff, “just some physical ailments that limit her to move around.”

Given those concerns, he said, “We’re throwing everything at this we can.”
