Search underway after swimmer fails to return to shore at popular NSW beach

The search for a swimmer who disappeared off Sydney’s shoreline has been called off amid rough weather.

The swimmer, believed to be a man in his 30s, was reported missing after failing to return to shore at the southern end of Maroubra Beach, south of Coogee, shortly before 4pm on Sunday.

Volunteers and vessels from Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour assisted water police in searching the area.

However, they were forced to suspend operations at 5.30pm due to poor conditions.

The search will resume at first light on Monday morning.

‘Conditions are not favourable offshore this afternoon, with choppy seas and squally rain showers,’ Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Andrew Harding said.

More to come.
