Single man sparks dating etiquette debate after sending $3 Venmo request: ‘I thought it was a joke’

How much is a first date really worth?

Well, one woman was left shocked after her date sent a Venmo request for a measly $3.25 to cover the cost of half the fries the pair had shared.

The 28-year-old detailed the questionable encounter to Reddit, explaining she shared a burger and fries with the 30-year-old man.

‘I offered to cover the tip since he paid for the meal,’ she explained. ‘This morning, I woke up to a Venmo request for $3.25 with the note “half the fries.”

‘At first I thought it was a joke, but nope, he was serious. I declined it and texted him that it was petty,’ she continued in the thread titled Am I Overreacting.

‘He responded saying I was overreacting, that “it’s about fairness” and “that’s just how he is,”‘ she shared.

‘Now I feel turned off and honestly insulted. My friends are split, some think I’m being petty too, others think it’s a red flag. Am I overreacting?’

While her friends may have thought her date was within his rights to ask, other Reddit users vehemently disagreed.

‘Girl, run. And do not pay him diddly. That man is petty and a score keeper,’ one user wrote. ‘Score keepers are THE WORST! Living with one is hell. You dodged a bullet,’ one exclaimed.

‘It just shows how petty he is,’ agreed another. ‘Anyone with a brain knows that requesting three bucks back will 100 percent guarantee no future date. He’s telling you that the $3 is more valuable than your company.’

Others theorized it could be some sort of test.

‘If he paid for the burgers, asking her to pay half of the fries is probably some sort of test,’ suggested one Reddit user.

‘A friend of mine went through something similar. The guy she was seeing asked her to pay him back like five bucks for a coffee and when she was taken aback by it he told her he was testing her to see if she was only after his money.’

Previously, New York based dating guru Niko Emanuilidis took to TikTok to share why men should always pick up the tab on a date.

The relationship guru, who frequently shares romance tips on his TikTok account, explained that men should always put their credit card down in the first ‘three to four months of dating.’

Niko began by explaining that in ‘modern day dating,’ a lot of men think they should split the bill.

‘No, you pay for the dates. You’re paying, you are paying, and if you can’t pay, then you shouldn’t even be dating,’ he said.

‘You should be focusing on your job, on your purpose, and making money to the point where you can afford to take a woman out and show her a good time.’

He noted that if men asked women to split costs, they should walk away since those who refused to pay for dates had ‘no concept of anything.’

The dating guru added: ‘That just shows me you have no dating experience, you have no concept of what’s masculine, what’s feminine and you’re just completely dropping the ball.’

The 34-year-old went on to note that men should pay for dates during the first ‘three to four months’ of a relationship.

‘You as the man are paying for everything. Shut the hell up and drop that credit card on the table, you’re paying b****,’ he said at the end of the clip.
