Smith makes huge call on wild PGA Tour ultimatum

Australian golf superstar Cameron Smith gave a one-word response when asked if he will consider returning to the PGA Tour – "no".

The Ripper GC captain told Australian media, including Wide World of Sports, of his emphatic decision on Wednesday morning.

His response came barely 24 hours after Brooks Koepka was welcomed back to the PGA Tour after quitting his LIV contract last month.

Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jon Rahm have been given three weeks by the PGA Tour to take up the same offer.

All four players have won a major in 2022 or since. Smith won the 2022 Open Championship and was No.2 in the world before a stunning $140 million move to LIV.

Asked on Wednesday why he won't consider the PGA Tour's offer – which includes hefty financial penalties – the 32-year-old was blunt.

"I've made a decision to come here and I'm standing by it," Smith said.

"I'm really excited for 2026, I think our team is going to have one of our best years yet and I can't wait to see what we do on the golf course."

When asked by one reporter "was the temptation real to follow Brooks?", he replied simply, "no".

"I've made my bed and I'm going to sleep in it," he continued.

"I feel like I'm in a really good place in my career, in my life with my family, and I don't need to change it."

A Spanish news outlet on Tuesday reported Rahm has decided to stick with LIV Golf, while DeChambeau is in advanced talks to extend his contract with the Saudi-backed league.

Smith believes both of them will also snub the PGA Tour's offer.

"I can't speak for the other guys to be honest, I don't know what they're going to do," he said.

Smith snubs PGA Tour offer to stick with LIV

"I think we have it pretty good out here (on the LIV tour) and I've made my decision. I can only assume theirs will be very similar, but I can't comment on what they're going to do."

Koepka has agreed to pay $7.45m to charity as part of his conditional PGA Tour return.

The Tour's boss also estimates the American superstar will forfeit anywhere between $75m and $126m in potential earnings after he agreed to several strict penalties upon his return.

Smith holds no grudge against Koepka for choosing to leave LIV.

"On one side I'm sad to see him go. He's a good friend, and it's not good," he said.

"But on the other side I'm really looking forward to what we're doing out here, and we're going to have the strongest field we've ever had."

Smith's full focus is now on leading all-Aussie team Ripper GC in this year's LIV Golf tour.

On Wednesday he was joined by countrymen Marc Leishman and Lucas Herbert as part of media duties promoting the new season, which includes Adelaide in February.

A major shake-up of LIV this year includes the tournaments moving from 54 holes to a traditional 72-hole format.

The switch means the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) may soon allow LIV players to accrue rankings points, which could ultimately determine their qualification for majors and for the 2028 LA Olympics.

Players who moved to LIV have been sliding down the world rankings.

"Hopefully 72 holes helps our chances of getting rankings points," Herbert told Wide World of Sports.

"It's been a bit of a tricky battle over the last few years… it's the best option for us qualifying for majors, and also being part of the golf ecosystem. Having our players ranked appropriately in the world rankings is an important thing.

"If we can get those world rankings points would be idea."

Rising Aussie golf talent Elvis Smylie is rumoured to be making the move to LIV and could become Ripper GC's fourth player this season.
