GOOOOOAL! Spain 2-0 Portugal
8 mins: Oh dear. It’s sheer delight for Spain, another wonderful goal crafted and finished off this time by Vicky Lopez, the 18-year-old who is in the team in place of Aitana Bonmati.
Portugal’s players meet just outside their box for a huddle and to reorganise. They took some hammerings in the recent Nations, losing 7-0 to England, and it looks like Spain are hungry for goals tonight.

GOOOOOAL! Spain 1-0 Portugal
2 mins: The worst possible start for Portugal. Spain lead inside just two minutes as Esther Gonzalez controls a long pass forward from Olga Carmona with her shoulder and flicks the finish past the goalkeeper and into the net! The Portugal players trudge back to the halfway line to restart. A nightmare.
But also, what a wonderful goal from Esther Gonzalez, who is may people’s pick for top scorer at the tournament.

‘They stole it from us’: How Spain can reclaim their moment
When the England team left the pitch after their last match against Spain, a 2-1 comeback defeat in June’s Nations League fixture, there was one overriding feeling in the dressing room. “They’re just so hard to play against”, was one exhausted view.
Spain’s ideology means they’re seen as an almost singular challenge in the women’s game. The England players enjoy the test, admire the players as icons, and know the world champions are the team to beat.
Spanish manager Montse Tome has still rejected the description of favourites, in that way that coaches do to try and get elite teams playing as if they are starting from scratch again. Many of Spain’s world champions would actually like to start from scratch in a different sense. This singular team want their own singular victory, independent of past troubles.

Lionesses ‘shocked’ by Diogo Jota’s death
England defender Lucy Bronze said the Lionesses would lend their full support to the Portuguese team at Euro 2025 after they were “shocked” by the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.
“Yeah it definitely shocked all the squad when we woke up this morning and the news started to spread,” said Bronze, who is half-Portuguese.
“Obviously we have a lot of Liverpool fans in our team and football fans, but for people in general, everyone is just thinking of them – him and his brother. They were so young as well.
“We have seen all the messages on social media and stuff so you can tell what a great guy he has been. It’s just really sad and we were shocked by the news, really.”

FULL TIME! Belgium 0-1 Italy
Arianna Caruso’s first half goal is enough to get Italy off to a winning start at Euro 2025. They beat Belgium 1-0 and looked to be in complete control, with some stylish flashes. Could they compete with Spain for top spot in Group B?
They will have to wait until the third round to play the world champions and are up against Portugal next. But that’s a fine start, especially since Italy did not win any of there three group games at Euro 2022.
The scenes as Italy make their first winning start in the tournament since 2009.
