The New York Yankees have traded for Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies, finally solving the need for a third baseman.
But the World Series runners up had been strongly linked with Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamonbacks, who has hit 36 home runs so far this season – just one less than Aaron Judge.
The Rockies have been sent two prospects for McMahon, an All-Star last season who has 16 home runs to his name for the season. 10 of those have come in the last six weeks.
The 30-year-old McMahon is left-handed, a preference for hitters at Yankee Stadium with the short right porch.
Contracted until 2027, he is unquestionably a significant upgrade on the options the Yankees have at thrid without him. And it comes at a time where the Yankees badly need an injection of impetus from somewhere.
They lost their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 this week, with the Canadian team leading the AL East by 5 wins over the Yankees.
The last loss on Wednesday night was littered with embarrasing fielding errors, with scrutiny intensifying on short stop Anthony Volpe.
