Su-34 is armed with the new Russian sliding bomb UMPB D-30

UMPB D-30SN is a new type of sliding bombs with an additional engine that enables it to start much further from its UMPK predecessor.

Arab Defense website-August 14, 2025: A high-resolution image of the long-range sliding bomb D-30SN appeared for Russian sources, and the image shows an attack with four bombs of this type, in a move that reflects Moscow’s push to develop air weapons to target Ukraine.

UMPB D-30SN is actually the name of a group of additional equipment that is installed on Soviet bombs already found in the Russian arsenal, and it is said to be used specifically with a very explosive bomb FAB-250. This group works to convert the falling bomb freely into a sliding bomb, enabling the planes to drop it from a safe distance without entering the enemy’s airspace.

Russian forces launched UMPB attacks on the city of Kharkif, northeast of Ukraine, continuously during the past months, and the published image shows that the four bombs are heading towards Kharkiv again. The Su-34 carrier plane was flying at that moment near the towns of Xino, Arcadivka, and Oshkovo in the Russian region of Bilgorod.

Assuming that the attack was directed towards Kharkiv as it happened earlier, the independent range of the UMPB D-30SN bomb is about 90 km. But these estimates are not a conclusive evidence that 90 km is the maximum extent of the UMPB bombs attack.

The data shows that the UMPB D-30SN has an attack by 20 to 30 km from the previous generation of Russian sliding bombs, UMPK, which, when installing it with a FAB-500 bomb, can weigh 500 kg airline for a distance ranging from 60 and 65 km when it is launched from high altitudes by a carrier that moves at large speeds.

UMPB-5

The Ukrainian authorities said that the new UMPB-5 grenades were thrown by Sukhoi SU -34 fighters on two areas in the past two months as part of the new weapon test.

An analysis participated in the Foundation for Democrats (FDD), a research center in Washington, with Newsweek that this sliding bomb is part of Russia’s growing efforts to develop low -cost guided munitions that can be launched from a safe distance.

Before the comprehensive invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has reduced the actual need for sliding bombs and other directed ammunition, as Russia’s sliding bombs before the war were relatively expensive and used with caution.

John Hardy of FDD indicated that Russia’s failure to destroy most of the Ukrainian air defenses at the beginning of the invasion prompted Moscow to develop cheap sliding bombs quickly, allowing the Russian Air Force to play a greater role in the conflict.

The Ukrainian authorities stated that the UMPB-5 was used for the first time in the Sumi area, then during two consecutive attacks on the city of Kharkif on July 24 and 25.

In the second case, the SU-34 plane fired the bomb from about 65 miles from the neighboring Russian Bilgorod region, according to Spartak Borisinko from the Prosecutor’s Office in Kharkiv.

Borissinko added that Russia is still testing weapons, and its accurate properties are not yet known, but the name UMPB-5 indicates that it is derived from the UMPB D-30SN that first appeared in the spring of 2024, according to the FDD.

The last style features a period longer than 50 miles that had a predecessor, and an explosive load of about 550 pounds, or 2.5 times the weight of its predecessor.

Low -cost sliding bombs play a growing role in the Russian attack; In July 2025, about 160 bombs were dropped per day, according to President Vladimir Zellinski, eight times the number in the spring of 2023.

The main bomb used is UMP-K or the “Slide and Comprehensive Correction Unit”, which first appeared in January 2023, designed to suit traditional bombs, was used initially with a very explosive FAB-500 M-62 bomb weighing about 1,100 pounds, and then adapted to fit bombs of different sizes.

Borissinko said that Moscow has begun to use a modified version of UMPK with larger wings and at least 60 miles in the Sumi and Corulev regions since May, and with the continuing tests, the range may increase, according to a Russian channel indicates to Telegram.

Russia also develops low -cost Cruise missiles, such as S8000 Banderol, which can be launched from distance drones.

John Hardy, deputy director of the Russia program at the FDD Foundation, said that the UMPB-5 bomb represents “a stronger version of the bomb that was entered last year, reflecting the efforts of the Russian Air Force to develop a growing group of low-cost guided munitions that are absolutely capable of a safe distance.”

Spartak Borissinko added: “UMPB-5 is a new ammunition that the Russians have begun to use about two months ago … and they are still testing it, and their accurate properties are not yet known,” added Spartak Borissinko.

Hardy pointed out that information about these new ammunition is still rare, but the Russian Air Force and Navy focus on producing large quantities of low -cost ammunition, adding that tackling weaknesses in destroying the air defenses of the enemy “will be a much more difficult problem.”
