‘Sumptuous’ period drama hailed as ‘perfect in every way’ with whopping 90% Rotten Tomatoes score is finally streaming on Netflix

If you’re looking to be transported to another time this holiday season, then this ‘sumptuous’ period drama that’s still being described as ‘perfect in every way’ may well be what you’re looking for.

The 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is, as one critic put it, a classic love story and it’s now streaming on Netflix.

Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy the film has an incredible Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%.

It also fares well on IMDb, where hundreds of thousands of viewers – yes, that many – have rated it 7.8 out of 10.

The film’s IMDb synopsis reads: ‘When Elizabeth Bennet meets the handsome Mr Darcy, she believes he is the last man she could ever marry.

‘But as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the man she has sworn to hate forever.’

The film is set in early 19th-century England and events take place in the still-standing stately home, Chatsworth House, which becomes the story’s fictional country estate of Pemberely.

Critic Don Shanahan described the film as ‘stately, emotional, sumptuous, and perfect in every way’ earlier this year.

His praise was also echoed on Rotten Tomatoes by Spanish critic Sebastian Zavala Kahn, who wrote: ‘Between the perfect casting, Wright’s excellent directing (I still can’t believe this was his first film), the memorable romantic moments, and the well-developed themes, it’s practically impossible not to fall in love with it.’

Martin Carr wrote in May: ‘Now, more than ever, audiences could do with some old-fashioned love stories. A time when dances were arranged for people to meet, marry, and settle down together.

‘When the highest accolade a man and woman could hope for was marriage to someone nice.’

The film’s addition to Netflix this holiday season is also a timely one as the streaming platform has confirmed that they are making their own Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

While a release date has yet to be announced, audiences have had their appetites whetted by its casting.

The platform has confirmed that the legendary Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden are heading up its cast after filming began this summer.

At the time of the 2005 film’s release, Keira Knightley said she saw a lot of herself in her character – and said that she hoped audiences did too.

She told Pop Entertainment: ‘I’m making a huge generalisation here – I’m assuming every woman wants to be, which is this incredibly passionate, clever, witty, intelligent, just amazing being, but also sometimes, that she is so annoying you want to kick her up the ass and tell her to sort it out.

‘So she’s really flawed, and you can imagine her going into a room and being slightly nervous about it and thinking, “Oh, I feel really stupid right now,” and that’s a very human characteristic.

‘So when people read the book, and hopefully, when they see the film, they will see aspects of themselves in that character. Which is what’s so brilliant about Jane Austen, that you see yourself in all her characters. Strong women.’
