Target faces backlash for selling women’s Champion pants with vulgar design

As someone working in women’s health, Dr. Marcy Crouch thought she had seen it all – until she discovered a pair of pants from Target.

The physical therapist recently took to TikTok to slam the sweatpants after she noticed they had an unflattering design.

In the video, Dr. Crouch help up the light tan pants, which came from a collaboration between Champion and Target, explaining that her friend had purchased them from the girls’ section of the chain.

The pants had a thick, elastic waistband with pleats at the front – including one right in the middle – with a slight flare at the bottom.

After trying the pants on, Dr. Crouch stood back from the camera and showed off the issue – the pleat in the middle stretched out in a strange way and looked like women’s genitals.

‘When I’m talking to you, this is what you see,’ she said, before sharing a message to Target: ‘Do better.’

She captioned the clip, ‘Someone made the decision to make this, and then multiple people in multiple meetings approved it.’

Reviews on the Target website showed a similar problem, with many people sharing pictures showing the pleats sitting in a similar way to Dr. Crouch’s.

‘Absolutely terrible design!’ declared a customer.

‘Looked cute on the hanger, but the pleats are… horrible. Will return,’ announced another shopper.

‘On the hanger me and my second grader thought these were a win! Got home, put them on and both of us didn’t like them,’ shared someone else.

‘The design in the crotch area is very unflattering and strange looking. Returning for sure.’

‘Huge pleat cut at crotch is super unflattering. Returning. We got a good laugh out of it however,’ quipped another.

The pants retail for $20 on Target’s website.

In an email to Daily Dot, Dr. Crouch admitted she was surprised when she tried the pants on.

‘I help women prep for labor, delivery, and recover from everything that comes after…so trust me when I say I’ve seen it all down there,’ she said.

‘But Target’s pants pleat? That was a first. And yes – it deserved a PSA. And clearly, no woman or vulva owner was on the design team. Just. Wow,’ she added.

After leggings were declared unfashionable by trendy Gen Z’s, sweatpants are more popular than ever.

A report last month from the Wall Street Journal by retail analyst group EDITED, titled ‘The Death of Leggings,’ revealed that sales of leggings made up almost 47 percent of all athleisure bottoms in 2022.

This year, however, that number plunged to 38.7 percent, marking a significant decline.

With leggings supposedly out, the new trend, according to Gen Z, is to wear baggy workout pants with a tight top.

According to Vogue, searches for ‘baggy gym outfits’ have risen by 400 percent on Pinterest in the past year.
