Territorial army can now be fully mobilised as India empowers Army Chief amid Conflict with Pakistan
What is the Territorial Army?
The Territorial Army, formed on October 9, 1949, has completed 75 years of service. It is fully integrated with the regular Army and has helped during wars, natural disasters, and other national duties. Over the years, TA members have received several gallantry and service awards for their efforts.
According to the government, this decision has been taken under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948, which allows the Army Chief to call out all TA officers and soldiers for support roles or to be fully embodied (activated) when needed.
A total of 14 out of the 32 Territorial Army Infantry Battalions will be deployed across India in areas under different Army Commands – including Southern, Northern, Eastern, Western, Central, South Western, Andaman & Nicobar Command, and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC).
Funding details
The order says that these units will only be activated if funds are available in the budget. If a different ministry, apart from the Ministry of Defence, requests their services, that ministry will have to cover the costs.
