The weather at the moment may be drab, but the fashion possibilities are anything but. Here are my favourite three trends for bringing joy and style to my winter wardrobe.

Coat, Malina. Jumper, Soft Goat. Jeans, 7 For All Mankind. Hat, Mango. Bag, Bottega Veneta. Gloves, Cos. Shoes, Jil Sander

  • 2026 has been declared the year of the over-the-top hat. And as you can see, I’m firmly on board! A faux-fur hat worn with your favourite coat adds a dollop of frivolity to cheer you up during wintry days. Designers such as Max Mara and Toteme have some great choices and there are lots on the high street, too. I found the chocolate brown one that I’m pictured wearing in Mango – it reminds me of the one Julie Christie wore in the 1965 movie Doctor Zhivago. I’m seeing this hat trend as a signal that the fashion world is ready to embrace high-octane style for the year ahead. And with the current political state of the world, who can blame anyone for seeking escapism.
  • Another top trend is the new and unexpected popularity of cobalt blue. It serves the same purpose as the ‘pop of red’ look, which first made its debut in the 2023 collections and is still going strong. With its vivid appeal, cobalt blue has long been a go-to choice for royals such as Princess Catherine and queens past and present, but it isn’t a colour we’ve seen much of in recent years. Yet, within the space of just two seasons, it has become a regular on the runway. Style with camel tones or a white shirt. It also goes beautifully with chic black.
  • Lastly, a fun look to indulge in during these dark winter months is a leopard-print coat (see below) – a ‘one-and-done’ statement piece capable of pulling together an entire outfit. It’s also a sound investment given that it is regarded as a fashion classic (see above for one of my favourites). My top leopard-print coat icons are Carolyn Bessette Kennedy rocking her vintage one on the streets of New York in the 1990s and, more recently, in 2025, Alexa Chung in Queens of Archive’s Priscilla version.

WILD THING!

Look fierce in this Rixo bestseller. A long leopard coat will instantly make you stand out from the commuter crowd on a grey morning.

ZING THE BLUES

These cobalt-blue trainers from the Adidas Originals collaboration with Wales Bonner will add just the right amount of colour pop to your outfit.

SPOTTED

And the award for best dressed at the Golden Globes goes to… in my opinion, Tessa Thompson, the breakout star of Netflix’s new thriller His & Hers, who sparkled in this custom-made Balenciaga gown. Wow.
