Magic: The Gathering‘s latest mainline set, “Edge of Eternities,” will be released next month and Variety has this exclusive reveal for a pair of new cards from the collection.
Per Wizards of the Coast‘s description for the new set, “From time immemorial, beings on this world and countless others looked skyward and saw only one thing: possibility. Beyond the known Multiverse lies wonder, adventure, and even more magic than you could imagine. ‘Edge of Eternities’ takes us to the Sothera system, with worlds to explore and treasures to uncover. It’s our first foray into space! This is going to be an experience like no other, and to prepare you, we have a rundown of all the new mechanics that await.”
In the images below, readers will get a first look at two land cards from Magic’s “Edge of Eternities” collection: “Cascading Cataracts” and “Power Depot.”
Variants of these bonus-sheet cards were previously unveiled by Wizards of the Coast, but these versions are among the handful of remaining cards set to be revealed before “Edge of Eternities” launches Aug. 1.
While Wizards of the Coast has been increasingly focused on its “Universes Beyond” sets — cards featuring worlds, characters and stories of other IPs, like the recently announced collaboration with Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” for a “Secret Lair” drop — the “Edge of Eternities” collection is a return to form for the core game’s mythology and its long-time fans.
“For ‘Edge of Eternities,’ we always thought about it as a space fantasy setting,” “Edge of Eternities” executive producer Mike Turian said during a sneak-peek press briefing earlier this month. “A lot of times we were talking about it as a space opera, as it were, and really the reason for that is when we do a new setting, we always think about it as, how do we bring the setting and the place we’re going and the tropes of that place together with magic? And that combination with magic really is what exemplifies, to me, the fantasy portion of it.”
To exemplify the sci-fi vs. sci-fantasy theme, Turian pointed to the new “Edge of Eternities” card “Starbreach Whale” (pictured above).
“I think it really encapsulates this idea, in a lot of ways, of, hey, our world defies physics,” Turian said. “We embrace magic and magic-using and planes-walking and we’re not beholden to science the way typically science fiction is. When you’re watching a science-fiction show, of course they do have moments that break reality and how science works, but they’re really more inspired by science. We are more inspired by magic and the fantasy setting itself.”
