The Summer I Turned Pretty Cast On Belly’s Engagement Ring

Ever since the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three dropped, fans on social media have been roasting the fuck out of the iddy-biddy, teeny-tiny engagement ring that Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) used to propose to Belly (Lola Tung). While the chit-chat online has made for some absolutely A+ content, the creator and stars of the series have mixed feelings about the discourse.

In case you haven’t seen what we’re going nutso over, let me put you on. In episode two, Jeremiah got down on one knee to propose to Belly in her lil’ college dorm room. Despite holding up the world’s tiniest diamond on the thinnest band imaginable, Belly said yes.

In episode three, the recently betrothed couple are now agonising whether they should tell their families. Ultimately, they do when Belly dramatically whips out the whisper of a ring as a ‘fuck you’ to Jeremiah’s dad Adam (Tom Everett Scott), who is low-key being a dick to Jeremiah.

Naturally, when people on social media saw the minuscule ring, they had things to SAY.

Although the general consensus is that the ring is shit, creator Jenny Han says that the hullaballoo is a bit over the top.

“I think it’s a little much,” Han told PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“It’s personally cracking me up,” Rain Spencer, who plays Taylor, added with a chuckle.

“It’s very, very funny,” Han conceded, but noted she thinks getting a smaller, cheaper ring was a “responsible” move for the characters not to have spent too much cashola on the ring.

Despite the worldwide hate, the series’ lead Lola Tung stands by the ring.

“I love that ring though,” Tung said earnestly. “I think it’s so them. They’re young and… Jeremiah has already put in father in debt. Also, I think it’s beautiful.

“It’s little, but it’s practical and I think it’s beautiful. But [the jokes online] are funny.”

The actual ring shown in the series is called the Diamond Fizz Ring, Sparkler from the jewellery brand Catbird NYC, which has a partnership with Prime Video for The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s season three release.

The ring is priced at a neat $298 AUD. While I’m not one to support the age-old practice of using one to three months’ salary on an engagement ring, I do think Jeremiah could have either chucked in another hundo or two for a sliiiiightly bigger rock.

Alternatively, he could’ve used the $298 to pay for a romantic dinner, a weekend away or even a therapy session or two.

Let’s be honest, it’s a super cute stacker ring. An engagement ring? Absolutely not. (Image: Catbird NYC)

Personally, I think while the rock is small for the general population’s dream proposal, the nod to a diamond on the ring couldn’t be more perfect for Belly and Jeremiah. They’re both young, optimistic, and their frontal cortex hasn’t developed yet. We all know this engagement is a bit of a doozy — especially when he’s cheated on her twice!

Hypothetically, though, if their relationship did last, I do think there’s something special about the ring changing over time and growing with them. After all, as Tung said in our interview, “it’s not about the material things, you know?”

The Summer I Turned Pretty season three is dropping with one episode per week on Prime Video. You can check out our full interview with Jenny Han, Lola Tung and Rain Spencer below.
