Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is at a breaking point after a disastrous season that left the franchise in turmoil, the Daily Mail understands.
The 29-year-old signal caller recently sparked concern regarding his mental health and future with the franchise after admitting he is no longer ‘having fun’ on the field.
‘If I want to keep doing this, then what am I trying to do with myself?’ Burrow told reporters during a cryptic press conference earlier this month. ‘And I have to have fun doing it. You know, if it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for?’
The 2025 campaign has been nothing short of a nightmare for the former No. 1 overall pick, who has seen his efforts nullified by a struggling offensive line as well as his own injury problems in the first half of the season.
And, as question marks over his Bengals future continue to circulate, a source close to Burrow has revealed to the Daily Mail how he is ‘waiting to erupt’ in frustration.
The source said: ‘Joe wants to go, and he is acting and reacting in every way to show his displeasure. He will not spit it out and demand a trade just yet, but if the Bengals fall on their a** and do nothing in the off season, he will absolutely ask for a trade.

‘It is a volcano just waiting to erupt,’ the source added, before naming the three NFL teams who could launch a stunning move for Burrow during the off season.
The source continued: ‘The Raiders, Jets and Steelers seem to be the top teams currently interested in Joe Burrow and will reach out to the Bengals to see if they’d be interested in negotiating in the off season.’
Behind the scenes, however, the Bengals hierarchy remains adamant that their star man is going nowhere – despite Burrow’s disparaging comments to the media.
‘The Bengals will not trade Joe Burrow in the offseason unless they get the biggest amount of draft picks that have ever been seen in the history of the NFL,’ the source revealed.
‘They have him signed until 2030, and he is their franchise quarterback. They’d love to start signing big names and obtain big help in the offseason and get the Bengals back to the promise land, but that is easier said than done.
‘They are seeing that he is frustrated and are crossing their fingers that he isn’t the next Andrew Luck and will retire well ahead of his expiration date.’
The tension follows a catastrophic 2025 campaign where the Bengals limped to a losing record, largely without Burrow after he suffered a turf toe injury in Week 2.
Burrow has recently hinted at internal resistance, claiming: ‘It feels like everybody is trying to do everything in their power to make me not play football, and I feel like I’m fighting it, fighting everybody else.’

Speaking to reporters at the start of the month, Burrow said: ‘There’s just a lot of things going on right now. A lot of things going on.
‘If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. You know, I’ve been through a lot and if it’s not fun then what am I doing it for? So, that’s the mindset I’m trying to bring to the table.’
‘All we can do is focus week to week and try to win games. I don’t think anybody’s really thinking about the playoffs right now. That’s within reach but on our fingertips so we just got to keep doing what we’re doing and try to get better.’
Despite the turmoil, Burrow showcased his elite potential in a Week 16 rout of the Miami Dolphins, where he threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns.
Across six games in this injury-plagued 2025 season, Burrow has amassed 1,268 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Any potential trade involving the star signal caller would be a logistical nightmare for the Bengals’ front office, due to the astronomical figures involved in his contract.
Burrow is currently playing under a massive five-year, $275 million extension that keeps him tied to Cincinnati until 2030.
The deal included a $40 million signing bonus and a staggering $219 million in total guarantees.

For the 2025 season alone, Burrow carries a cap hit of $46 million, a figure that is set to rise to nearly $48 million in 2026 and over $51 million by 2027.

Since being drafted first overall in 2020, Burrow has endured a brutal run of injuries, including a torn ACL and MCL in his rookie year and a major wrist surgery in 2023.
With three years of playoff absences weighing heavy, the ‘volcano’ in Cincinnati may be closer to blowing than the front office dares to admit.
Further complicating matters for Cincinnati are recent contract extension awarded to receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase’s deal made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history with $161 million going to the receiver over four years. Meanwhile, Higgins’ deal is also for four years, albeit for only $115 million.
