Top leader ‘Modem’ among 10 maoists killed in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: In a significant blow to banned CPI (Maoist), security forces on Thursday claimed to have killed 10 Maoists, including central committee member, Manoj alias Modem Balakrishna, in Gariyaband district of Chhattisgarh.

With various aliases, Manoj was the CCM and in-charge western bureau under Odisha State Committee (OSC) of CPI (Maoist). Wanted by the state police, Manoj was a native of district Warangal and studied Intermediate in Malakpet Jr. College, Hyderabad, from 1981-83, according to officials.

The senior Maoist leader was attracted by the teachings of Sambamurthy and Santosh Reddy regarding Revolutionary Student Union ideology and went to Badhrachalam forest to take charge of anti-government activities in 1983, officials added. He was first arrested by police in Badhrachalam in 1984 and was lodged in Warangal central jail till the end of 1986.

After his release, Manoj returned to Hyderabad city and was kept in a den in Mahaboobnagar Town.In 1987, Mahaboobnagar Police raided his place and arrested him. But he was released in exchange of kidnapped TDP MLA Venkateswara Rao in January 1990. He later worked in the Hyderabad city area. In April 1991, he was appointed as district commander of Mahaboobnagar and was later made regional head of South Telangana Region Committee in May 1991.Manoj was arrested in March 1993 in Kurnool district and lodged in Chanchalguda central jail. He was released on a conditional bail in 1999 after which he went underground. He was made secretary of Orissa State Organizing Committee. Currently, he was guiding the western bureau under the OSC.

Meanwhile, two CRPF personnel were injured, one of them critically, on Thursday in a pressure improvised explosive device blast planted by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, about 450 km south of Raipur. The explosion occurred along the Barsur route, about 40 km from the district headquarters, according to police.


In another development, 16 Maoists have surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, police said on Thursday. The cadres turned themselves in before senior police officials on Wednesday evening.
