An investigation is underway after a former Queensland police union boss died suddenly at his home.
Queensland’s cross-border commissioner Ian Leavers was found dead at his Brisbane home on Tuesday.
‘Around 9.50am this morning police were called to a non-suspicious sudden death at Mount Ommaney,’ a Queensland police spokesperson said.
‘Police investigations in relation to this matter are ongoing.’
Mr Leaves joined Queensland Police in 1989 and worked in various divisions, including the criminal investigation branch and child investigation unit.
He served as the general president and CEO of the Queensland Police Union for 15 years from 2009 to 2024.
He was also the president of the Police Federation of Australia from 2021 until his resignation last year.
Ian Leavers is seen talking to the media outside the inquest into the Wieambilla shooting at the Brisbane Coroners Court in Brisbane, Friday, August 2, 2024.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described Mr Leavers as ‘dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state’.
‘As Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner Mr Leavers has been a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along the State’s borders during a critical stage of rebuilding following the impact of the COVID pandemic,’ he said.
‘Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the Police Service he loved.
‘Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some our State’s most tragic and defining events.’
Mr Crisafulli said Mr Leavers left a strong contribution through his service with Queensland Police and the union, where he ‘championed safer working environments’ and advocated for the police to be ‘well-resourced and supported’.
‘On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time,’ he said.
More to come.
