Tragedy as a mother becomes the FIFTH person to be killed in a crash in horror 48 hours on Victorian roads

A mother has become the fifth person to die on Victorian roads in 48 hours following a two-car crash.

Five people have been killed on the state’s roads since Sunday morning in a series of two-vehicle collisions.

The Gippsland mother was killed when two vehicles collided at the intersection of North Canal Road and Willow Grove Road, Trafalgar, on Mother’s Day about 5.55pm.

It is believed one of the cars did not stop at a stop sign before it crashed with the other in the middle of the intersection.

One of the vehicles, a Toyota sedan carrying a 49-year-old woman, a 52-year-old male driver, a 19-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, careered off the road and tumbled down an embankment after the collision.

Emergency responders declared the woman dead at the scene.

The other occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 60-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.

His passenger, a 58-year-old woman, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Victoria Police Detective sergeant Mark Amos labelled the incident an ‘absolute tragedy’.

‘We’ve got the loss of a life, a wife, a mother, on Mother’s Day (who) is killed in a crash that just should never ever have occurred,’ he said, according to Seven News

Det Amos said it appeared as though the 52-year-old male driver of the Toyota sedan drove through the stop sign.

Images from the scene show extensive damage to the passenger side of the car.

‘Driving a car on our roads is not an easy task. It’s a complicated task and it’s to be taken seriously and just a moment of inattention, a moment’s distraction, you go through a stop sign and you ruin your life and lives of your family, in one single blow,’ Det Amos said.

‘The simple message is, “pay attention, be alert, slow down, concentrate”, because without doing that, you’re going to lose somebody – somebody dear, somebody close and somebody important.’

Det Amos said the exact circumstances of the crash remained under investigation.

Four other people have been killed on Victorian roads since Sunday.

On Monday, two people were killed in a head-on crash at Clayton South, east Melbourne.

The pair, the sole occupants of their respective vehicles, collided on Westall Road and Rosebank Avenue about 6am.

Both were declared dead at the scene and are yet to be formally identified.

Police expected the intersection to be closed for ‘some time’ while investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Emergency services also attended a two-car collision at Pootilla, near Ballarat, about 4pm on Sunday afternoon.

One of the drivers was declared dead at the scene.
