Tragedy in the Blue Mountains: Boy found dead after vanishing on camping trip with friend

A teenage boy has been found dead in remote Blue Mountains bushland after he became separated from a friend during a school holiday camping trip.

NSW Police said the 16-year-old had been on a planned three-day camping trip with a 17-year-old friend when the pair became separated in rugged bushland in Blue Gum Forest.

The two boys travelled to Leura Train Station on Tuesday before setting out on foot towards Mount Hay.

About 5.45pm on Wednesday, the older boy activated his personal locator beacon after the pair lost contact with each other.

A land and air search was launched soon after, before the teenager was found and winched to safety from the Acacia Flats camping ground.

But his younger companion could not be found at the time.

The search resumed on Thursday morning and at about 1pm, the body of the missing 16-year-old was found in a creek in Blue Gum Forest within Blue Mountains National Park.

Police said a post-mortem examination will be carried out in the coming days to determine the cause of death before a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
