Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes learn fate after legal bid to shut down struggling steakhouse

A judge has reportedly denied an emergency request to shut down the Kansas City steakhouse owned by Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs stars are being sued – along with their business partners at Noble 33 – over the name of their new restaurant 1587 Prime and its apparel brand.

Boston-based company 1587 Sneakers has filed a lawsuit in a New York federal court claiming that the shoe brand first used ‘1587’ to sell its products in 2023 – two years before the steakhouse opened its doors.

1587 Sneakers claims it owns trademark rights to the four-digit mark and that ‘1587 Prime’ infringes on its brand and confuses customers.

On Wednesday, however, KMBC reported that a federal judge refused to sign a temporary restraining order against the steakhouse.

That would have meant Kelce, Mahomes and Co were immediately blocked from advertising or selling products using ‘1587’ or ‘1587 Prime.’ According to KMBC, the sneaker company also hoped to force the steakhouse to cancel any orders related to the branding.

But the judge reportedly had concerns over whether the case belongs in a New York court. They also pointed out that there had been a ‘significant delay’ between the opening of 1587 Prime – in September 2025 – and 1587 Sneakers asking for emergency relief.

The judge did not, however, dismiss the lawsuit, meaning the legal fight will go on. Instead, they said the court could consider future motions once the defendants have been properly served and jurisdiction issues are resolved.

The restaurant’s name is derived from Mahomes and Kelce’s jersey numbers, 15 and 87. The sneaker brand, which is aimed at Asian Americans, included 1587 as a nod to the year Asians are believed to have reached North America.

The shoe company did not file a clothing trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for ‘1587’ until late last year and that application remains under review, as confirmed by the USPTO.

Mahomes and Kelce’s steakhouse filed for its trademark in the bar and restaurant category in December of 2023.

However, according to the lawsuit obtained by the Daily Mail, that is irrelevant because 1587 Sneakers used the number to sell shoes nearly two years before the defendants launched its ‘1587’ restaurant and apparel brands.

And although the names do differ, slightly, the filing against 1587 Prime’s owners dismisses that distinction.

‘Defendants’ added term “PRIME” does nothing to distinguish the Accused Marks from Plaintiff in any legally meaningful way,’ read the filing.

The restaurant opened in September to mixed reviews. Food critic Liz Cook slammed 1587 Prime in an article for the Defector, writing that it was overpriced.

She credited the restaurant for its popularity with diners in Kansas City, thanks in part to the Taylor Swift effect. Across social media, Swifties have broadcast their efforts to snag a table, desperately hoping they will catch a glimpse of Kelce’s fiancée.

Cook also praised how the restaurant appears, with a marble staircase and servers dressed smartly. But that was about all she could offer that was positive.

‘There are at least two employees whose main job appears to be setting things on fire,’ Cook wrote about the menu and the famous cocktail on offer called ‘The Alchemy’, created in tribute to Swift.

‘The drink tasted like a Cosmo someone had strained through a French Vanilla Yankee Candle,’ she added.

She goes on to describe her steaks being thin or overcooked (and arriving without a steak knife), ‘cop-outs’ on local touches that are meant to support local Kansas City businesses and ‘ChatGPT-grade luxury tropes’.

And on top of that, she added, you have to pay through the nose for it. Her most expensive steak cost $78, she paid $15 for ‘three small ramekins of ketchup, one of which was pure uncut Heinz’ and her Alchemy cocktail came in at $22.

The steakhouse has faced other issues as well, including allegations of misconduct against Noble 33 co-founders Tosh Berman and Michael Tanha.

An attorney representing Noble 33 previously denied the allegations. Kelce and Mahomes are not accused of any wrongdoing.
