Tributes flow for Brisbane Grammar School graduate, 17, after he died in a ‘sports accident in Japan’

The schoolmates and teachers of a teenager killed in a freak accident overseas are remembering him as a ‘great friend of everyone and loved by all’. 

Rylan Pribadi, 17, is believed to have died in a sports accident in Japan on January 7.

It’s understood the former Brisbane Grammar School student was just weeks shy of his 18th birthday when he died ‘while doing what he loved most’. 

‘Rylan was known for his friendly, approachable nature, reliability, and commitment to those around him,’ a statement read from the school read. 

Rylan’s passing has profoundly affected all who knew him, and our school community mourns the loss of a bright and valued member of the BGS family. 

‘He was passionate about football, contributing to the Premiership-winning First XI in 2025, and in the same year, he served with distinction as a Boarding Prefect. 

‘The School extends its deepest condolences to Rylan’s parents, Reza and Jacky, his two sisters and their extended family and friends.

‘We hold Rylan and his loved ones in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time.’

The school said Rylan had joined Brisbane Grammar School in 2022 as a boarder and quickly became a respected and well-liked member of the Year 9 cohort. 

Rylan’s passing came as a shock to many in the close-knit school community.

A man, who said he was Rylan’s former boarding house supervisor and tutor, shared an emotional tribute to the teen.

He said he would always remember the teen’s ‘warmth and humour’. 

‘It made me incredibly proud to watch Rylan grow into a thoughtful, confident, and aspirational young man during the time I knew him,’ the man wrote. 

‘He never liked to boast about his achievements – he was driven and highly capable, yet always sincere, grounded, and genuine. 

‘He had an extraordinary future ahead of him. This devastating loss could not have happened to a more kind, generous, and loving son, nor to a more beautiful family.’

People also spoke of Rylan’s love for sport, particularly soccer.

‘He was also a talented soccer player and I vividly remember the celebrations after the GPS finals when he looked the happiest I’d ever seen him,’ one person shared. 

‘As an Old Boy who demonstrated all the qualities of a true Grammar Man, his loss must be immeasurably devastating to many. We will all miss him immensely.’

Another added: ‘A highlight of 2025 will always be the First XI Premiership- in which he valiantly contributed to. 

‘Rylan truly knew what the definition of brotherhood was, he believed in something greater than himself, and strived to always help others reach their goals.

‘Graduating in 2025 would never have been so special without him.’
