Ukraine-Russia war latest: Trump says Moscow will face sanctions in 10 days if it does not take steps to end conflict

US president Donald Trump says he will start imposing tariffs and other measures on Russia 10 days from today if Moscow does not make progress towards ending the Ukraine war.

Mr Trump, who first announced on Monday that he was shortening his initial 50-day deadline for action from Russia to “10 to 12” days, said he had not had a response from president Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, the Kremlin said it had “noted” Mr Trump’s decision to cut his deadline from 50 days, but Russian former president Dmitry Medvedev told a US senator: “It’s not for you or Trump to dictate when to ‘get at the peace table’.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would continue to pursue what it calls its special military operation.

Russian glide bombs and ballistic missiles struck a Ukrainian prison and a medical facility overnight as the relentless strikes on civilian areas killed at least 27 people across the country, officials said. They killed at least 16 inmates and wounded more than 90 others, Ukraine’s justice ministry said.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes hit 73 cities, towns and villages. “These were conscious, deliberate strikes — not accidental,” Mr Zelensky said.
