Virgil van Dijk hints there are more signings to come for Liverpool as Alexander Isak informs Newcastle he wants to explore transfer options

Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk has added fuel to the fire by suggesting there is ‘more to come’ from the club, as speculation continues to mount over a blockbuster move for unsettled Newcastle star Alexander Isak.

The Reds have already had a busy window, breaking the bank to the tune of nearly £300million with the acquisitions of Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Florian Wirtz, his team-mate Jeremie Frimpong, Bournemouth breakout star Milos Kerkez, and latterly, prodigal French striker Hugo Ekitike has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Now, the Premier League champions may look to add the wantaway Swedish striker to their roster of already impressive talent.

‘Let’s see what happens for the rest of the transfer window,’ Van Dijk told The Anfield Wrap, after a sweltering pre-season match in Hong Kong.

‘I think we’ve made great additions to the team so far and I think they will definitely have the quality to play for Liverpool.’

Van Dijk’s remarks will do little to dampen the noise growing around Newcastle striker Isak.

The veteran captain issued a glowing assessment of the new arrivals, which will cause a sense of unease to rivals ahead of the season openers in just over three weeks.

The Dutchman added: ‘For me it’s very important to see how they settle into the group and fit into the squad that we have and I think all of them have.

‘There’s Armin – the young goalie who just came from don’t know where – and he’s settled in pretty well. There’s obviously Freddie, Giorgi, Flo, Jeremie, Hugo came today of course.

‘Everyone has to work hard, we’re all in this together and that’s the main thing.’

Ekitike is the latest to arrive with hefty expectations on his young shoulders, but his skipper was quick to throw some friendly banter his way.

‘He’s just flown in but we’ll probably have to fine him for wearing the wrong kit,’ Van Dijk quipped. ‘No, it’s good to have him here. Now he has to work his socks off and be important for us and that’s enough.’

Van Dijk remained coy about the club’s chance of retaining their crown. ‘This season we all start from scratch and everyone has tried to improve their teams,’ he said.

‘I think it’s all down to how we show our quality and consistency and we know how difficult that is. So we just have to focus on ourselves. The hard work is obviously already going on.’
