‘World has gone cuckoo’: Terrified locals recall disturbing moment they saw two women covered in blood after stabbing in Potts Point, Sydney

A shaken resident has recalled the moment she saw two women covered in blood after they were stabbed inside a unit block in an elite Sydney postcode.

Police were called to St Neot Avenue in Potts Point about 10.50am on Tuesday, after reports a man armed with a knife had entered the complex and stabbed two women.

An officer attempted to use a Taser on the man but it was ‘ineffective’, police said.

A round was discharged by an officer after the man confronted police, ‘striking him’, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna told a press conference.

Footage from the scene shows paramedics loading the man into a waiting ambulance. The man was confirmed deceased ‘sometime later’.

It’s understood the two women, aged 48 and 56, both suffered head and facial injuries consistent with stab wounds and blunt force trauma.

They were treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital. Neither of the women, from two separate units, was known to the man.

Sue, who lives on the street behind the unit block, witnessed the fallout of the stabbing as she was walking her dog.

‘I saw a woman covered in blood [she gestured to her shoulders]… and a woman in the balcony above putting an ice pack on her head,’ she told Daily Mail.

‘I get goosebumps as I talk to you. And so I just walked very quickly, and then at least 10 police cars just screamed by. The world has gone cuckoo.’

Another local said they also heard the commotion.

‘My girlfriend is on the street. She could not leave. She heard a woman screaming… yelling,’ they told this publication.

A third resident said the street was usually peaceful.

‘Nothing happens here, it’s a very quiet area. It’s dead silent over the time. It is a bit weird a bit unnerving,’ they said.

Assistant Commissioner McKenna said one of the women’s injuries was ‘more significant’ than the other, but was not believed to be life-threatening.

He said taking a life was ‘the last thing’ police wanted to do.

‘I’ve got police officers going home today after being confronted by something very, very violent who are going home safe and well although traumatised by that,’ he said.

Meanwhile, a critical incident has been declared and a crime scene has been set up.

The investigation will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
