You’re Terrible: Toni Collette Addresses Rumours Of Long-Awaited Muriel’s Wedding Sequel

Fans have been begging for a Muriel’s Wedding sequel basically ever since the original film arrived in 1994, and now its lead star, Toni Collette, has offered her two cents.

The beloved comedy (or more accurately, tragedy) — which follows the titular small town girl in her quest to land a groom — has earned its place in the canon of Aussie cinema, so it’s no surprise there’s been chatter about giving it a sequel decades after it first premiered.
Addressing those whispers in a recent interview with Stellar magazine, Collette — who found her breakthrough role in her portrayal of Muriel Heslop — said that despite the enduring legacy of Muriel’s Wedding (which is still quoted by this writer on the daily), fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

“I can’t imagine there would be a sequel,” Collette said, all-but dashing our collective hopes of revisiting ABBA’s classics (for the hundredth time).
While the actress, who’s also known for Hereditary and Knives Out, appeared to put the kibosh on sequel rumours, she did admit that on second thought, perhaps there is more of Muriel and her bestie Rhonda’s tale yet to come
“I guess you could pick up the story now,” Collette admitted, leaving the door open for a potential follow-up years after Muriel and Rhonda left Porpoise Spit in the rear-view mirror.
Elsewhere in the interview, Collette said she was surprised to hear that fellow Aussie classic The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, also released in 1994, is getting the sequel treatment, with that follow-up currently in the works under director Stephan Elliott.

It’s not the first time Collette has imagined where her beloved character might be following the events of the original film. In 2015, the actress said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she envisions Muriel living a quaint life in the suburbs of Sydney.
“[She’s probably] in the suburbs. She’s probably got some pet fish and a cat and maybe she’s a preschool teacher,” Collette said. Honestly, I can picture it, to the point where I might just have to pay Muriel’s pet fish a visit!
Meanwhile, P.J. Hogan, who wrote and directed the movie, said in the same interview that a sequel is unlikely because “the story felt so complete to me”.
“They drive over a hill and you don’t see them again,” Hogan said. “The most important sequel is the one playing out in the viewer’s head.”
While part of me is disappointed by the news, Hollywood’s recent instance on reboots and sequels has proven that more doesn’t necessarily mean better, so perhaps it’s a good thing Muriel’s Wedding remains the standalone classic it is.
After all, you’ll never be able to recreate the line that has lived rent-free in my brain for years: “You’re terrible, Muriel!”.
