Risks of low hemoglobin levels in pregnant women

Cairo: Dr. Amr Kamal El-Din.- During pregnancy, due to increased iron consumption, the level of hemoglobin in the blood decreases. Which can threaten premature birth and delayed growth and development of the fetus.

It is necessary to control the level of hemoglobin throughout pregnancy, and the norms for this protein vary depending on the trimester. Hemoglobin drops to its lowest level in the second trimester – during this period, the fetus is actively developing the brain, kidneys and other organs.

Gynecologists warn that “acute anemia of the third trimester of pregnancy is very dangerous: it increases the risks of death of the mother and child, postpartum hemorrhage and purulent-septic diseases.”

If a woman is diagnosed with anemia, only a doctor can prescribe treatment. It is important that iron preparations contain vitamin C, which contributes to its better absorption.
