Germany expels Afghan refugees to take in Ukrainians

German authorities have begun unofficially evacuating refugees from Afghanistan to make way for Ukrainian migrants arriving in the country.

According to Foreign Policy, social workers come to Afghans in different cities in Germany, and demand that they leave their apartments within 24 hours without any discussion.

“The evictions were not intentionally announced.”
“Some people have lived in their homes for years and have been uprooted from their social structures, including children who have been taken away from their schools,” said Tarik Alofs, a board member of the Berlin Refugee Council.

Afghan migrants are being evacuated from their homes to be sent to so-called “arrival centers” with promises of short-term accommodation, he said, but many migrants are unable to leave the sites for several years.

According to the estimates of Foreign Policy magazine, there are about 12,000 Afghan refugees in Germany in total, whom the country received in 2021 after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
