Astronomy Institute: There is no need for the hype around the solar eclipse next April…and a total eclipse in Luxor 2027

Dr. Yasser Abdel Hadi, a professor at the Sun and Space Research Laboratory at the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, confirmed that there is no need for the uproar on social media pages about the total solar eclipse that will occur next April 8.

Abdul Hadi revealed, in a statement to the Middle East News Agency, the details of the first solar eclipse of 2024, which will not be seen in Egypt and the Arab region, and the timing of its middle coincides with the conjunction of the month of Shawwal for the current Hijri year 1445.

He explained that solar eclipses are natural phenomena that occur annually, in which day turns into night for a period of minutes due to the moon blocking the disk of the sun.

He said that In 2006, a total solar eclipse occurred in Egypt in the city of Salloum, followed by all specialists and amateur astronomers from all over the world. A total solar eclipse is scheduled to occur on August 2, 2027 in the city of Luxor.

He added that there were partial solar eclipses that occurred in Egypt in 2013, 2015, and 2020, and a total solar eclipse occurred last year in April, and Egypt was unable to see it.

As for the details of next April’s eclipse, Dr. Yasser Abdel Hadi indicated that this total eclipse will last approximately five hours and 10 minutes from its beginning until its end. At the peak of the total eclipse, the moon’s disk will cover about 105.7% of the entire disk of the sun, and the eclipse will cover an area 197.5 wide. km, and it will take a period of 4 minutes and 28 seconds. It can be seen as a partial eclipse in western Europe, North America, northern South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic.

Regarding the phenomenon of a solar eclipse, Dr. Ashraf Tadros, professor of astronomy at the institute, explained that a solar eclipse is the fall of the moon’s shadow on the Earth and occurs during the day, and a solar eclipse, whether “total, partial, or annular.” It never happens unless the moon is set, that is, when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the moon’s shadow falls on the earth.

He emphasized that it is possible to benefit from the phenomena of solar eclipse and lunar eclipse to confirm The beginnings and ends of the lunar or Hijri months, as the phenomena clearly reflect the movement of the Moon around the Earth and the movement of the Earth around the Sun.
