The Somali government gives the Ethiopian ambassador 72 hours to leave the country

It appears that the diplomatic crisis that broke out between the two countries witnessed a major escalation in Somalia and Ethiopia following the controversial memorandum of understanding signed in January between the authorities of Addis Ababa and the authorities of the separatist Republic of Somaliland to allow the Ethiopians access to the Red Sea.

According to the Italian Nova Agency, the Somali federal government has given the Ethiopian ambassador in Mogadishu, Mukhtar Mohamed Weru, 72 hours to leave the country, to conduct “in-depth consultations”.

< p>In a serious development of the crisis, the Somali government ordered the closure of the two Ethiopian consulates in Hargesia, the capital of Somaliland, and in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, for a period of 7 days, according to Nova Agency, citing a statement by the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, in its statement, that “these measures were taken in order to preserve the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of the country, the Federal Republic of Somalia.” While the Federal Government of Somalia remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining and strengthening peaceful relations with all neighboring countries, it is essential that mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity form the basis of these relations.

It comes. This decision was made after Ethiopian Foreign Minister Misgano Arga received, yesterday, a delegation from Puntland headed by Finance Minister Mohamed Farah Mohamed in Addis Ababa.

The visit focused, as stated in An Ethiopian memorandum identifies potential areas of cooperation in the sectors of trade, investment, energy and joint infrastructure, as well as security and education.
