Advance:

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal has offered a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in ‘The Bride!’.
  • The new version of ‘Frankenstein’ is already in production.
  • Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening and Penelope Cruz co-star.

Like literary horror icon Dracula, Mary Shelley’s Dr. Frankenstein and the ill-fated creation of the not-so-ethical doctor are seemingly always the subject of adaptations for screens big and small.

The latest to try to retell something new is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who showed that she had great directorial skills to accompany her acting career when she made the intense drama ‘The Lost Daughter’ in 2021 and went on to get three Oscar nominations.

But ‘The Bride!’ (for that’s the title of his latest title, exclamation point and all) should certainly turn out to be something quite different from Gyllenhaal, and now he’s taken to Instagram to offer the first looks at It stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley via from the film’s camera tests.

What is the story of ‘The Bride!’?

'Girlfriend!'

Here’s the movie’s tagline: A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the help of Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for himself. The two revitalize a murdered young woman and the Bride (Buckley) is born. She goes further than either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild, radical social movement.

Who else appears in ‘The Bride!’

Gyllenhaal’s cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough and Penelope Cruz.

From the looks of it, Bale is going down the typically compromised path (we’re sure it’s prosthetics, though he’d probably agree to die and be sewn back together in the service of his art if he had half the chance). and Buckley’s appearance is also striking.

It’s a seemingly refreshing take on the ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ story, written by the director and selected for distribution by Warner Bros. And that title, whether it keeps the exclamation point or not, – – indicates a solid role for Buckley, who did a great job on ‘The Lost Daughter.’

As we noted at the beginning, the novel seems to have endless fascination for creative types, who still want to put their own spin on it. We can also expect a version from Guillermo del Toro, who has wanted to tackle the story for some time and now has one in the works for Netflix starring Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi alongside Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.

When will ‘The Bride!’ be on? On cinemas?

Warner Bros. has scheduled the film for release on October 3, 2025.
